  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Returned to AHL

Skarek was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on Sunday, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports. The Islanders activated Marcus Hogberg (upper body) from injured reserve in a corresponding move to occupy the backup role behind Ilya Sorokin. The 25-year-old Skarek has appeared in two NHL games this season, stopping 34 of 39 shots en route to a record of 0-1-0.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Solid in relief duty Tuesday

Skarek stopped all seven shots he faced in relief during Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rangers. Skarek looked solid between the pipes in the third period after replacing Ilya Sorokin, who allowed five goals on 11 shots before being replaced at the start of the third period. Skarek has made just two appearances (one start) this season, stopping 34 of 39 shots and posting a 3.95 GAA.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Concedes five goals in debut

Skarek stopped 27 of 32 shots in Sunday's 6-3 road loss to the Panthers. The Islanders allowed two goals in each period, with the Panthers' final tally going into an empty net. The 25-year-old Skarek was making his NHL debut and proved no match for the reigning Stanly Cup champions. Skarek should work as Ilya Sorokin's backup until one of Semyon Varlamov (lower body) or Marcus Hogberg (upper body) gains clearance to return.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Set to start Sunday

Skarek will start Sunday on the road versus the Panthers, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports. Skarek will get the second half of a back-to-back after Ilya Sorokin took a 3-2 overtime win over the Lightning on Saturday. Sunday's start will be Skarek's first career NHL appearance, and it comes against the defending champions, who won a 5-1 game over the Blackhawks on Saturday. Skarek should be faded by fantasy managers Sunday, given his inexperience and the challenge presented by the opponent.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Shipped back to minors

Skarek was returned to AHL Bridgeport on Monday, per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com. Skarek suited up against Utah on Saturday, serving as the No. 2 option behind Marcus Hogberg while Ilya Sorokin (illness) was unavailable. The decision to return Skarek to the minors should be an indication that Sorokin will at least be healthy enough to fill the backup role when the Islanders face off with the Senators on Tuesday.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Recalled Saturday

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Lands on waivers

Skarek was placed on waivers by the Islanders on Sunday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Skarek was a third-round draft pick by the Islanders in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The 24-year-old is unlikely to be claimed on waivers -- he has yet to post a save percentage above .900 or a GAA below 3.00 in his five years of AHL experience. Skarek went 7-22-6 with an .888 save percentage and a 3.23 GAA in 36 regular-season appearances with AHL Bridgeport in 2023-24.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Promoted from AHL

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Goalie of the month

Skarek was named goalie of the month for Bridgeport of the AHL, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Skarek went 5-0-2 with a 1.98 GAA and .935 save percentage in seven games in January. Those numbers could make it easier for the Islanders to consider a trade of Semyon Varlamov at the NHL trade deadline. Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin have pretty much split the starting job over the past two seasons. However, with the Islanders still up against the salary cap, they could decide to move on from Varlamov and save his $5 million versus the cap next season. Skarek will likely be the backup to Sorokin if that's the case.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Assigned to AHL affiliate

Skarek was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on Wednesday. Ilya Sorokin and Cory Schneider are currently serving as the Islanders' top-two netminders, and Semyon Varlamov (undisclosed) should be ready to return soon, so there's no reason for the team to carry Skarek as a fourth goalie. The 21-year-old Skarek will undoubtedly spend most of the campaign in the minors.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Up to taxi squad Wednesday

Skarek was promoted to the taxi squad Wednesday, per CapFriendly. Cory Schneider was assigned to AHL Bridgeport on a conditioning loan, so Skarek will serve as the No. 3 goalie for the Islanders. Once Schneider's loan is done, Skarek will likely return to the minors.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Sent to AHL

Skarek was sent to AHL Bridgeport on Friday, Arthur Staple of The Athletic reports. Skarek is no better than fourth on the depth chart in goal for the Islanders. If he were to start a game for the team this season, things must have gone terribly wrong between the pipes. Skarek will serve as organizational depth in goal.

  • Islanders' Jakub Skarek: Missing again Tuesday

Skarek was not on the ice for the second day in a row Tuesday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Skarek almost certainly is fourth on the team depth chart, so his chances of actually playing in any games are pretty much nil. Heading into the play-in series against Florida, the Isles figure to utilize Seymon Varlamov between the pipes.
