  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Dealing with minor injury

Blomqvist is reportedly dealing with a minor undisclosed injury, per Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports on Thursday. The Penguins seem content to run out Tristan Jarry the rest of the way after bringing him up in a swap for Blomqvist on March 3. Between that and the 23-year-old Blomqvist's injury concern, fans and fantasy managers may not see the young netminder in an NHL crease again this year.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Reassigned to minors

Blomqvist was demoted to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Monday. Blomqvist has been struggling of late, going 1-2-1 with a 4.30 GAA in his last five outings, including giving up six goals on 33 shots in Sunday's overtime loss to Toronto. With the youngster's performance slipping, the Penguins decided to get him some minutes in the minors while bringing up Tristan Jarry in a corresponding move. If Pittsburgh can move Jarry before the March 7 trade deadline, Blomqvist could find himself back in the NHL sooner rather than later.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Woeful performance Sunday

Blomqvist surrendered six even-strength goals on 33 shots in Sunday's 6-5 overtime loss to Toronto. After picking up a win in relief Thursday against the Flyers, Blomqvist turned in his worst performance of the season on home ice. The six goals mark the most he has conceded in a game this season -- he hadn't allowed more than four prior to Sunday's defeat. Blomqvist holds a 4-9-1 record, .885 save percentage and 3.81 GAA through 15 appearances this season. The 23-year-old probably would have been better off developing in the minors this season, but Tristan Jarry's poor play earlier in the campaign forced Pittsburgh's brass to alter its netminding configuration.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Outdueled on home ice

Blomqvist surrendered four goals on 15 shots in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Rangers. The fifth marker was an empty-netter. After allowing three goals in relief of Alex Nedeljkovic in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Capitals, Blomqvist was unable to make a timely save for his team in Sunday's loss. The Penguins were outshooting the Rangers 31-9 after two periods, but Igor Shesterkin was stellar in the road crease. Blomqvist has struggled in his first NHL season -- he's conceded at least three goals in 11 of 13 appearances in 2024-25. Overall, the Finnish netminder owns a 3-9-0 record, .886 save percentage and 3.72 GAA.

Blomqvist will protect the home net against the Rangers on Sunday, according to Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site. The 23-year-old Blomqvist has a 3-8-0 record with a 3.68 GAA and an .893 save percentage through 12 NHL appearances this season. The Rangers rank 14th in the league with 2.96 goals per game in 2024-25 and lost 8-2 to Buffalo on Saturday.

Blomqvist turned aside 14 of 17 shots in Saturday's 8-3 loss to the Capitals. Blomqvist took the reins from Alex Nedeljkovic late in the second period after the Capitals poured on four goals in the middle frame. The 23-year-old Blomqvist may have started Sunday's matchup against the Rangers, but his relief appearance could change the coaching staff's plans.

Blomqvist will defend the road net against Philadelphia on Saturday, per Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff. Blomqvist will get the second half of Pittsburgh's back-to-back after Alex Nedeljkovic played in Friday's 3-2 win over the Rangers. The 23-year-old Blomqvist has a 3-7-0 record with a 3.59 GAA and an .899 save percentage in 10 NHL appearances this season. Philadelphia sits 23rd in the league with 2.79 goals per game in 2024-25.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Concedes four goals

Blomqvist saved 21 shots out of 25 attempts in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Kraken. In his second start after receiving the promotion from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Jan. 15, Blomqvist kept a clean slate through the first period before conceding two goals in each of the second and third frames. The loss bumped the 23-year-old's record down to 3-7-0 on the season with a 3.59 GAA and an .899 save percentage. For the time being, he will continue to play relief to Alex Nedeljkovic, who has two wins in his last three outings. Blomqvist should remain off fantasy hockey radars for the time being.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Starting in Washington

Blomqvist will guard the road goal versus the Capitals on Saturday, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. Blomqvist will get the second half of Pittsburgh's back-to-back after Alex Nedeljkovic played in Friday's 5-2 win over Buffalo. The 23-year-old Blomqvist has a 3-5-0 record with a 3.60 GAA and a .904 save percentage in eight NHL appearances this season. Washington sits third in the league with 3.56 goals per game in 2024-25.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Stands tall in win

Blomqvist stopped 32 of 34 shots in Friday's 4-2 win over the Capitals. Blomqvist received his first start since Oct. 29 and turned in a good effort against a strong team. The Capitals were able to wash away a 2-0 deficit, but the Penguins scored twice in the third period to secure the win. Blomqvist improved to 3-4-0 with a 3.25 GAA and a .913 save percentage over seven outings (six starts) this season, though this was just the second time he's held a team to two goals. Alex Nedeljkovic will likely be back between the pipes Monday versus the Stars, but Blomqvist could start during a back-to-back next weekend, assuming Tristan Jarry isn't recalled from his conditioning loan prior to then.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Unable to hold back barrage

Blomqvist stopped 46 of 50 shots in Friday's 4-0 loss to the Oilers. Blomqvist didn't stand much of a chance with the Penguins getting out-shot 50-27 in the game, including a lopsided second period that saw the Oilers break through. The Penguins' leaky defense has made it tough for any of the team's goalies to shine, though Blomqvist has often looked better than Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic. Through five games, Blomqvist is 2-3-0 with 16 goals allowed on 180 shots. Nedeljkovic is likely to start Saturday in Vancouver, and Jarry could re-enter the mix next week, but none of Pittsburgh's goalies should be rostered on a full-time basis in most fantasy formats until the team in front of them improves significantly.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Gives up four goals Friday

Blomqvist stopped 35 of 39 shots in Friday's 4-1 loss to the Hurricanes. Blomqvist gave up four unanswered goals in this one and has been inconsistent, flipping solid and subpar displays every time he steps in the crease. The 22-year-old netminder sits at 2-2-0 on the season, posting a .908 save percentage and a 3.16 GAA through four appearances. However, he's posted a save percentage below .910 in three of his four outings, which could be a cause for concern.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Exits ice first Friday

Blomqvist was the first goalie off the ice Friday, Wes Crosby of NHL.com reports, indicating he'll be in goal at home versus Carolina. Blomqvist will look to build off Wednesday's 26-save relief performance versus the Sabres in which he helped the Pens secure a come-from-behind overtime victory. To open the season, the 22-year-old backstop is 2-1-0 with a 2.86 GAA and .913 save percentage while significantly outplaying Tristan Jarry. At this point, Blomqvist could see the bulk of the workload until Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) returns from a conditioning assignment.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Gets win in relief

Blomqvist turned aside 26 of 28 shots after replacing Tristan Jarry midway through the first period in Wednesday's 6-5 overtime win over the Sabres. The 22-year-old entered the game with the Penguins down 3-1, and his strong performance wound up netting him his second win in three appearances this season. Blomqvist's 2.86 GAA and .913 save percentage are making a case for a bigger role in the Pittsburgh crease, and perhaps even the starting job given Jarry's atrocious 5.45 GAA and .833 save percentage -- at least until Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) gets healthy.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Sharp in loss

Blomqvist made 29 saves on 32 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Maple Leafs on Saturday. The fourth goal was an empty-netter. It's hard to fault Blomqvist on any of the goals. He was left high and dry on a two-on-none break, and William Nylander ripped it past him high early in the second period. Matthew Knies beat the Pittsburgh netminder from the crease about two minutes later, and Mitch Marner ripped one past him on a breakaway early in the third. With Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) on the shelf and Tristan Jarry's poor performance in Pittsburgh's season opener, Blomqvist has started two straight games and could get rewarded with more playing time.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Wins NHL debut

Blomqvist made 29 saves in a 6-3 win over Detroit on Thursday. It was his NHL debut, and he helped Pens' fans forget about the team's 6-0 loss to the Rangers the night before. Blomqvist became the youngest Penguins goalie to win his NHL debut since Philippe De Rouville in 1995. Blomqvist is third on the Pens' depth chart, but fans are already calling for the team to sit Tristan Jarry in favor in the young man. We're not ready to go there yet, but watch this situation. Pittsburgh needs to win, and at some point, they may need to make some touch decisions about their blue paint.

Blomqvist will protect the road goal versus the Red Wings on Thursday, Penguins play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports. Blomqvist is in the backup role to begin 2024-25 while Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) remains sidelined.

Blomqvist allowed three goals on 29 shots in Friday's 7-3 preseason win over the Blue Jackets. Blomqvist endured a rough start Friday and gave up two goals over the opening 5:05 of playing time, but he settled down afterward and conceded just one goal the rest of the way. Blomqvist has yet to make his NHL debut after being selected in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft. However, he has a shot at opening the regular season against the Rangers on Oct. 9 as Tristan Jarry's backup because Alex Nedeljkovic (lower body) is unavailable.

  • Penguins' Joel Blomqvist: Added to NHL roster

Blomqvist has been added to the Penguins' roster Tuesday, per the NHL media site. Blomqvist's addition to the roster could be an indication that Tristan Jarry (illness) once again won't be available against New Jersey on Tuesday. The Penguins didn't carry a second netmidner on the roster versus the Rangers on Monday but will at least have Blomqvist available if needed.
