Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Loses in overtime
Blackwood stopped 22 of 25 shots in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Jets.
The Jets' first two goals came on a tip and a deflection before Neal Pionk sealed their win with a slap shot in overtime. Blackwood has lost four of his last five outings, giving up a total of 14 goals in that span, in which he's 1-3-1. For the season, the 28-year-old is 15-13-5 with a 2.57 GAA and a .916 save percentage over 34 appearances. This is his first real stretch of struggles with the Avalanche, though his four recent defeats have all come against teams currently in a playoff spot. The Avalanche have a back-to-back up next -- they visit the Bruins on Saturday and the Rangers on Sunday.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Slated to start Wednesday
Blackwood is expected to get the starting nod at home versus Winnipeg on Wednesday, Jesse Montano of Guerilla Sports reports.
Blackwood has featured in 14 of the Avs' last 17 contests, posting a 9-4-1 record to go with an impressive 1.97 GAA. Given his heavy workload thus far, the 28-year-old netminder should be expected to be in the crease more often than not -- though an upcoming back-to-back versus the Bruins and Rangers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, should give Blackwood a night off in favor of Scott Wedgewood.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Struggles again Monday
Blackwood turned aside 23 of 26 shots in Monday's 3-1 loss to the Wild.
Although Blackwood has been largely successful since joining the Avalanche, he was charged with a second consecutive loss Monday as he wasn't particularly sharp against Minnesota. The 28-year-old has allowed seven goals on 54 shots (.870 save percentage) over his last two starts, and it certainly seems possible that the Avalanche will give him a breather Wednesday against the Jets in order to regroup. If Blackwood sits Wednesday, Scott Wedgewood would presumably draw the start.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Between pipes against Minnesota
Blackwood will defend the home crease against the Wild on Monday.
Blackwood has been relatively effective since being traded to the Avalanche from the Sharks, but he'll be looking for a bounce-back performance Monday after he gave up four goals on 28 shots (.857 save percentage) in a loss to Edmonton on Thursday. Blackwood made a road start against the Wild on Jan. 9 and turned aside 24 of 25 shots (.960 save percentage) en route to a 6-1 win.

Considering the Avalanche had a 3-0 lead just over halfway through the first period, this was an unimpressive performance. This was Blackwood's first bad outing for Colorado -- he had not allowed more than two goals in any of his prior 12 appearances. He's now 15-12-4 with a 2.54 GAA and a .918 save percentage across 32 games between the Avalanche and the Sharks. Colorado's next game is Saturday versus the Stars.

Avalanche's Mackenzie Blackwood: Collects overtime win
Blackwood stopped 27 of 29 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 overtime win over the Rangers.
It wasn't looking good for the Avalanche until Artturi Lehkonen tied the game late in the third period. Devon Toews added the game-winner in overtime, but Blackwood deserves a lot of credit for keeping the score close until the offense took over. He has won four of his six outings in January and still has yet to give up more than two goals as a member of the Avalanche. For the season, he's 15-11-4, including a 9-2-1 record with the Avalanche. He's added a 2.49 GAA and .920 save percentage over 31 appearances when accounting for his time with the Sharks. Blackwood is likely to get the nod Thursday against the Oilers, though Scott Wedgewood is healthy after a five-game absence due to a lower-body injury and may snag a start some time soon despite the Avalanche having no back-to-backs for nearly two weeks.

Trent Miner will play between the pipes in Wednesday's road tilt against Chicago, which is what's freeing Blackwood up to face the tougher 26-11-4 Wild. The 28-year-old Blackwood has been phenomenal since being acquired from San Jose by Colorado, posting a 7-1-1 record, 1.69 GAA and .938 save percentage across his past nine outings. Blackwood hasn't allowed three or more goals in a single game since Dec. 7, when he was still a member of the Sharks -- and even then, it was hardly his fault given that San Jose allowed a staggering 54 shots to head Blackwood's way in that 3-1 loss to Florida. Colorado typically doesn't ask nearly as much of the goaltender, and while the Wild are a fantastic team overall, their offense is merely average -- Minnesota is tied for 14th in goals per game with 3.05.

Blackwood saw an end to a four-start winning streak. He held the Avalanche's 1-0 lead for 44 minutes before the Canadiens got to him for the game-tying goal late in the third period. The Avalanche have won five straight games, and Blackwood is responsible for four of them. He was able to hold firm in the third period, allowing Colorado to build its lead with a three-goal frame. Blackwood now has an 11-10-3 record with a 2.71 GAA and a .917 save percentage over 25 appearances between the Avalanche and the Stars. He's won five of his six outings with Colorado, allowing just 11 goals, so he's proving his worth behind a stronger defense. The Avalanche continue their homestand Thursday against the Sabres.

Blackwood picked up his fourth win in five starts since being acquired by Colorado from San Jose, and he also has a stellar 1.82 GAA and .940 save percentage in that span. The 28-year-old was able to limit the damage to a tipped-in Nick Schmaltz power-play goal in the third period. Blackwood improved to 10-10-3 with a 2.75 GAA and a .917 save percentage through 24 appearances this season. He signed a five-year contract at a $5.25 million cap hit earlier Friday, so he appears to be the goalie of the present and near future for the Avalanche. He should be an excellent fantasy netminder for the rest of the campaign.
