Top Texans News

  • Texans' Xavier Hutchinson: Moves up depth chart

Hutchinson could see more playing time after the Texans placed Nico Collins (hamstring) on injured reserve Wednesday.

Hutchinson was given a season-high 48 snaps and three targets last week while filling in for Collins, who was removed from Houston's win over Buffalo after just nine snaps. The primary beneficiaries over the next four weeks will be Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell and Dalton Schultz, but Hutchinson should be on the field more than normal.

  • Texans' Dameon Pierce: Limited session Wednesday

Pierce (hamstring) was limited at practice Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Houston's lead back Joe Mixon (ankle) didn't practice. Per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, coach DeMeco Ryans expects Pierce to be back for Sunday's game against the Patriots, and if that's the case a key Week 6 role could await the running back if Mixon remains sidelined this weekend. With Pierce and Mixon having missed action of late, Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale have been sharing Houston's backfield duties.

  • Texans' Jimmie Ward: Stays sidelined

Ward (groin) did not practice Wednesday.

Ward exited Sunday's win over the Bills after he aggravated a groin injury that had him questionable for the matchup, and also caused a Week 4 absence. The Northern Illinois product will work to get back on the practice field Thursday or Friday ahead of their Week 6 matchup with the Patriots.

  • Texans' Kamari Lassiter: Logs DNP

Lassiter (shoulder) did not practice Wednesday.

Lassiter played 100 percent of the team's defensive snaps in Sunday's win over Buffalo, so it's not clear how or when he picked up the injury. Assuming, it did happen during the game and he was able to play through it, it's likely not a significant injury for the Georgia product. Greater clarity should come when the team returns to the practice field Thursday.

  • Texans' Jake Hansen: Not practicing yet

Hansen (back) did not practice Wednesday.

Hansen missed Sunday's win over the Bills with the injury and remains sidelined for the start of Week 6 prep. His absence to start the week casts a shadow of doubt on his ability to return against New England; however, as an exclusive special teams contributor, his potential to sit out wouldn't impact the Texans' defensive game plan.

  • Texans' Robert Woods: Starts week with DNP

Woods (foot) didn't participate in practice Wednesday.

Woods also missed some practice time due to a foot injury leading up to the Week 5 win over the Bills, but he managed to play through it, though the veteran wide receiver didn't draw a target. Based on how the Texans deployed their wide receivers after Nico Collins (hamstring) exited against Buffalo, Xavier Hutchinson would likely join Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell in three-receiver sets Sunday against the Patriots while Woods is limited to a depth role if he plays.

  • Texans' Dameon Pierce: Trending toward return

Pierce (hamstring) was at practice Wednesday, DJ Bien-Aime of ESPN.com reports.

Pierce, who hasn't played since Week 1, returned to practice last Friday, and his presence at Wednesday's session is a positive indicator with regard to his Week 6 status. While Joe Mixon (ankle) remained sidelined for the Texans' opening practice this week, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston relays that coach DeMeco Ryans expects Pierce to be back for Sunday's game against the Patriots. Pierce thus could potentially move into a key role in Houston's backfield this weekend, if Mixon is unavailable versus the Patriots.

  • Texans' Tank Dell: Role may expand with Collins out

Dell could see additional targets for at least the next four games after the Texans placed Nico Collins (hamstring) on injured reserve Wednesday.

Dell has posted more than 40 receiving yards only once this season and is still searching for his first touchdown of 2024 after scoring seven times in 11 games as a rookie in 2023 prior to suffering a season-ending injury to his lower leg. Through the first five weeks of the season, Dell has struggled to earn meaningful volume in the passing game while ceding the majority of targets to Collins and Stefon Diggs, but Collins' absence will allow Dell to take on a regular role in two-receiver sets. After Collins exited early in last week's win over the Bills, Xavier Hutchinson served as the primary No. 3 wideout behind Diggs and Dell.

  • Texans' Stefon Diggs: Set for No. 1 role

Diggs is poised to lead Houston's receiving corps for at least the next four games after the Texans placed Nico Collins (hamstring) on injured reserve Wednesday.

Diggs has been out-targeted 45-41 by Collins through five games, and Collins has been much more effective with his volume, posting a league-leading 567 receiving yards compared to Diggs' 315. While Diggs' focus on shorter routes will make it tough to replicate Collins' exceptional production, the veteran wide receiver's fantasy stock should nonetheless rise from this development. Diggs could be in for even more attention from star quarterback C.J. Stroud for the duration of Collins' absence, with Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson and Dalton Schultz also expected to help pick up the slack.

  • Texans' Joe Mixon: Not practicing

Mixon (ankle) isn't practicing Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Mixon hasn't played since Week 2 and has managed just one limited practice since then (Friday of Week 4). Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans admitted Monday that he isn't sure if the running back will return for Sunday's game at New England, and Mixon's continued absence from practice to begin Week 6 prep isn't the most encouraging sign. Dameon Pierce (hamstring) returned to practice at the end of last week, potentially giving Houston a new candidate to lead the backfield after Cam Akers and Dare Ogunbowale took on most of the work in the past three games.

  • Texans' Nico Collins: Placed on IR

The Texans placed Collins (hamstring) on injured reserve Wednesday.

Collins will miss at least four games due to the hamstring injury he sustained in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Bills. As a result, Collins won't be eligible to return to action until the Texans' Week 10 matchup with the Lions on Nov. 10. The star wideout currently leads the NFL with 567 receiving yards, making his loss a tremendous blow for CJ Stroud and the Texans passing offense, but Houston has a deep enough receiving corps to feel confident in the abilities of Stefon Diggs, Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson and tight end Dalton Schultz to step up in Collins' absence.
