Top Lions News

  • Lions' Sione Vaki: Returns to practice

Vaki (nose) was a full participant in Sunday's practice, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Vaki broke his nose during last Monday's practice session. The fluke injury kept the special-teamer out for just under a week. The running back remains in contention for relief carries behind Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco (knee). With Pacheco out for most of the preseason due to a sprained MCL, Vaki could have a lot of opportunities to show his proficiency in Saturday's game against the Commanders.

  • Lions' Trayveon Williams: Signs with Detroit

The Lions signed Williams to a contract Saturday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

With Jacob Saylors (ankle) and Kye Robichaux (foot) both suffering lower-leg injuries, the running back depth for the Lions has taken a significant hit since Thursday. Williams was likely signed to bolster the preseason corps. The 28-year-old played in three regular-season games for the Chargers last year, playing 56 total snaps and rushing three times for a loss of one yard.

  • Lions' Kye Robichaux: Potential broken foot

Robichaux (foot) may have a broken bone in his foot, Ben Raven of MLive.com reports.

Robichaux suffered the injury during Thursday night's preseason opener against the Bengals. If the running back did suffer a broken bone, he would likely miss a significant period of time and could be a candidate for season-ending injured reserve. With Robichaux not having much hope to make the 53-man roster, a broken bone should all but seal his fate.

  • Lions' Jacob Saylors: Day-to-day with ankle issue

Saylors (ankle) could return to practice in "a day or two," Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News reports.

Saylors likely picked up the issue in Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals. The running back is set to be the starting kick returner for the Lions this season, so healing completely from the issue takes priority over preseason action. Saylors played just nine offensive snaps over 16 regular-season games in 2025 compared to 281 special-teams snaps.

  • Lions' Dan Jackson: Plays in preseason opener

Jackson logged 34 snaps during Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals.

The strong safety participated in 34 percent of the Lions' defensive plays but did not appear otherwise in the final box score. Thursday marked Jackson's first preseason action, as the second-year safety was placed on injured reserve in early August of his rookie season due to a leg injury.

  • Lions' Thomas Harper: Suits up Thursday

Harper produced three solo tackles in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Bengals.

Harper logged 39 defensive snaps and 12 special-teams snaps in the contest. The free safety played 56 percent of the defensive snaps for the Lions. Harper's ability to consistently take down the ball carrier solo may earn him more snaps in subsequent preseason games, such as in next Saturday's showdown with the Commanders.

  • Lions' Kye Robichaux: Gets eight carries in preseason opener

Robichaux participated in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Bengals, rushing eight times for 31 yards.

Robichaux's night peaked with a 13-yard rush. The 23-year-old tied Jacob Saylors for the most Lions rush attempts in the game as the duo continues to compete for the No. 4 spot on the depth chart behind Jahmyr Gibbs, Isiah Pacheco (knee) and Sione Vaki (nose).

  • Lions' Sam LaPorta: Rested during exhibition opener

LaPorta did not play in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Bengals.

LaPorta joined Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams in street clothes for the exhibition. LaPorta is looking for a bounce-back season in 2026 after battling a back issue that limited him to just nine regular-season contests last season. He's expected to slot in as the third or fourth option in this Detroit offense under new OC Drew Petzing.

  • Lions' Jameson Williams: Rested in preseason opener

Williams did not play in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Bengals.

The Lions rested their key starters, including Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. Aside from trading David Montgomery, not much has changed in terms of offensive personnel for Detroit in 2026, though the team does have a new play caller in OC Drew Petzing. After posting a 65-1,117-7 line across 17 regular-season games last season, Williams will remain a focal point of the pass offense.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Sits out preseason opener

Gibbs was held out of Thursday's preseason opener against the Bengals.

The star running back was among a number of key skill players rested by the Lions on Thursday, a group that also included QB Jared Goff, WRs Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, as well as TE Sam LaPorta. Since he signed a lucrative three-year contract extension with the team last week, Gibbs -- who had previously reportedly been dealing with a minor back issue -- has been practicing, and is thus slated to reprise his role as the clear-cut top option in Detroit's backfield, and in turn maintain his standing as an elite fantasy option ahead of the 2026 regular season.

  • Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Throws eight passes in Lions debut

Dobbs completed four of eight passes for 32 yards and added a nine-yard run in Thursday's 16-14 preseason loss to the Bengals.

Dobbs made his Lions debut four days after singing with the team Sunday in the wake of Teddy Bridgewater's retirement. Luke Altmyer got the start Thursday and turned the ball over three times, so the undrafted rookie seems unlikely to challenge Dobbs for the second spot on the depth chart behind Jared Goff once Dobbs familiarizes himself with Detroit's playbook. Dobbs is likely to play more extensively against the Commanders on Aug. 22 in the Lions' second preseason game.

  • Lions' Luke Altmyer: One TD, three turnovers in debut

Altmyer completed 13 of 22 passes for 130 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Thursday's 16-14 preseason loss to the Bengals. He also rushed four times for one yard, ran in a two-point conversion and lost a fumble.

Altmyer played most of the game in his NFL debut, but the undrafted rookie out of Illinois didn't help his chances of winning the second spot on Detroit's QB depth chart. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Tarik Black with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter and ran in the ensuing two-point conversion, but Altmyer also turned the ball over three times. The recently signed Joshua Dobbs seems likely to beat out Altmyer for the backup role, but both options will likely see action int he team's next preseason game, Aug. 22 against the Commanders.

  • Lions' Mekhi Wingo: Suffers head injury

Wingo sustained a head injury in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Bengals, Nolan Bianchi of The Detroit News reports.

Coach Dan Campbell said afterward that Wingo "got his bell rung," suggesting Wingo will undergo concussion testing over the next 24-to-48 hours. Wingo appeared in just two regular-season games last season.
