Mapu (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Mapu will have a chance to return this season since the Patriots used one of their two designated to return IR spots from cutdown day. The second-year pro will still need to miss the first four games of the season, but will then be eligible to return Week 5, assuming he is healthy enough to do so.

Patriots' Marte Mapu: Dealing with injury
Head coach Jerod Mayo told reporters Wednesday that Mapu is considered week-to-week with an undisclosed injury, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
Reiss also noted that Mapu hasn't practiced since the first day of Patriots' training camp, so it's been almost a full month since he last touched the field. While the Sacramento State product remains sidelined, expect Joshuah Bledsoe to see more reps as New England's second-team free safety.

Patriots' Marte Mapu: Snatches interception in loss
Mapu recorded an interception and a pass deflection in Sunday's 27-17 loss to the Chiefs.
Mapu stepped in front of a pass from Patrick Mahomes in the second quarter, securing his first career interception. The rookie played 14 defensive snaps, his highest total since Week 8, which helped lead to the interception.
