Friday's game will be Grimes' first and only exhibition action after signing a qualifying offer with Philadelphia during training camp. With Jared McCain (thumb) sidelined for the start of the regular season, Grimes is in position to start at shooting guard for the 76ers in the early going.

After a lengthy negotiation, Grimes settled for a one-year, $8.7 million qualifying offer at the beginning of October. The team had already left for Abu Dhabi before he agreed to the deal, so he missed the team's first two preseason contests and will miss a third Friday. Grimes has only one more chance to suit up -- Friday, Oct. 17, against the Timberwolves -- before the regular season begins.

Grimes and the 76ers brass have been going back and forth during contract negotiations, which didn't appear to be heading in the right direction. However, now he's back in the fold and has a no-trade clause. He'll become an unrestricted free agent next summer. His participation in the preseason remains uncertain, as it was reported that he wouldn't travel with the team overseas to Dubai before this deal was finalized. After being traded to Philadelphia by the Mavericks, Grimes played in 28 regular-season games, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game, shooting 46.9 percent from the field and 37.3 percent from beyond the arc.

The 76ers and Grimes remain "very far apart' on a new deal, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday.
For the first time this offseason, Grimes received a formal offer from the 76ers on Wednesday, but it sounds like he wasn't impressed. In fact, Grimes will not be attending Media Day on Friday and will not travel with the team for their overseas preseason trip this weekend. Charania added that this situation may ultimately come down to Grimes taking the qualifying offer and betting on himself next offseason.
