  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Clubs 18th homer

Langeliers went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Friday's 13-3 win over the Angels.

Langeliers has four homers over his last 13 games, and he's hitting .288 (15-for-52) in that span. The catcher has been more power than contact in 2024, but he's done both well of late. He ranks second to only Seattle's Cal Raleigh in homers among backstops -- Langeliers has 18 of them on the year. He's added a .213/.267/.443 slash line with 52 RBI, 35 runs scored, four stolen bases, nine doubles and two triples over 83 contests.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Ends homer drought

Bleday went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a double in Friday's 13-3 win over the Angels.

Bleday has five extra-base hits over his last two games, but he hadn't homered since June 22 before taking Matt Moore deep in the sixth inning. Bleday also recently endured a stretch of 20 contests without a multi-hit effort. That's taken some of the shine off a decent year for the outfielder, who is slashing .232/.314/.431 with 12 homers, 34 RBI, 42 runs scored, 25 doubles and four triples over 97 games. He's yet to successfully steal a base in 2024.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Excellent in blowout win

Schuemann went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four total RBI and three runs scored in Friday's 13-3 win over the Angels.

Schuemann got the start at third base rather than shortstop, but he was quickly moved back to his most common position after Jacob Wilson suffered a hamstring strain early in the game. It appeared Wilson's promotion from Triple-A Las Vegas could have a ripple effect on the Athletics' infield, but if the injury lands him on the injured list, Schuemann would figure to once again have a clear path to an everyday role. For the season, Schuemann is slashing .255/.345/.373 with six home runs, eight doubles, 24 RBI, 39 runs scored and nine stolen bases over 75 contests, though he's been sharper lately by hitting .390 (16-for-41) in July.

  • Athletics' Michel Otanez: Returns with scoreless inning

Otanez (forearm) pitched a perfect inning and struck out one in Friday's 13-3 win over the Angels.

Otanez was struck by a line drive off his right arm last Saturday versus Philadelphia. He ended up missing little action thanks to the All-Star break, which gave enough time to shake off the forearm bruise he suffered on the play. He has pitched in five games in the majors this year, allowing three runs and posting a 7:5 K:BB over 4.2 innings in a low-leverage role.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Collects third straight win

Sears (7-7) allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 5.2 innings to earn the win Friday over the Angels.

Sears gave up a pair of solo home runs, but he received enough run support to earn his third straight win. He's allowed four runs (three earned) over 16.1 innings while adding an 18:3 K:BB during that winning streak, which spans all of July. The southpaw is now at a 4.49 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 80:32 K:BB through 106.1 innings across 20 starts this season. Sears is projected to make his next start at home versus the Astros.

  • Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Strains hamstring during debut

Wilson exited Friday's game in the fourth inning due to a left hamstring strain, Martin Gallegos of reports.

Wilson suffered the injury while rounding third base in the third inning, and he was pulled after testing out his hamstring in the field ahead of the fourth frame. It's possible that the 22-year-old's injury causes him to land on the injured list immediately after making his MLB debut, which would put Max Schuemann back into the starting shortstop role.

  • Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Exits Friday's game early

Wilson was removed from Friday's game against the Angels with an apparent injury, Martin Gallegos of reports.

Wilson hit a single during his first career MLB at-bat in the third inning, but he came up limping after coming around to score and was replaced on defense once the A's took the field. The nature of Wilson's injury remains unknown, but Oakland will provide more information once its training staff takes a closer look at him.

  • Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Making major-league debut Friday

Wilson is starting at shortstop and batting eighth in Friday's series opener against the Angels.

Wilson has risen quickly through the Athletics' farm system since being selected sixth overall in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft. Following his promotion to Triple-A Las Vegas on May 8, Wilson has slashed .398/.444/.639 with four home runs, 12 RBI and a 1.083 OPS across 90 plate appearances. He'll take over the starting job at shortstop for Max Schuemann, and if Wilson is able to adapt as well to the big leagues as he has in the minors, he could move up in the A's batting order during the second half of the season.

  • Athletics' Brett Harris: On bench Friday

Harris is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Angels.

Harris has been the Athletics' primary third baseman with Abraham Toro (hamstring) sidelined but could begin to split time with Max Schuemann at the hot corner now that top prospect Jacob Wilson is handling shortstop. Harris is slashing .163/.284/.302 with three home runs in 102 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Contract officially selected

The Athletics selected Wilson's contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday.

It was reported Thursday that Oakland would be calling up Wilson for Friday's second-half opener versus the Angels, and he's now officially been added to the 26-man and 40-man rosters. The 22-year-old was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft and has posted a 1.161 OPS with eight homers and two steals in 46 games between the Double-A and Triple-A levels this season. He should take over the starting job at shortstop from Max Schuemann.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Serves as DH in rehab game

Toro (hamstring) slotted in at designated hitter Thursday during a rehab game in the Arizona Complex League, going 0-for-1 with two walks.

Toro took a full game's worth of plate appearances in the seven-inning contest while suiting up on back-to-back days for the first time on his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old will likely bump up to a higher affiliate as soon as Friday when minor-league play resumes following the All-Star-break.

  • Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Heading to big leagues

The Athletics will promote Wilson from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Friday's game versus the Angels, Martin Gallegos of reports.

Since being selected in the first round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft, Wilson has quickly ascended through the Athletics' farm system. This season, he's slashed .427/.459/.673 with seven homers and 31 RBI across 183 plate appearances between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas. The 22-year-old has played exclusively at shortstop during his time in the minors, and he'll likely claim the starting job from Max Schuemann immediately upon joining the big-league roster.

  • Athletics' Esteury Ruiz: Plays full nine on defense

Ruiz (wrist) started in center field and played nine innings in the ACL Athletics' extra-inning loss to the ACL Brewers on Tuesday, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

While Ruiz's hot streak at the plate during his rehab assignment was ironically snapped against a much lower caliber of competition than he normally faces, the fact the outfielder played a full game's worth of innings on defense is the main takeaway. After logging 21 plate appearances over five games down on the farm, Ruiz may be deemed ready for activation ahead of the Athletics' game of the second half Friday against the Angels.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Slugs grand slam in rehab game

Toro (hamstring) went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in the ACL Athletics' win over the ACL Angels on Wednesday.

The recovering veteran also logged a full workload at second base in the seven-inning contest, which is an encouraging development in his second rehab game. The bases-loaded blast was a bonus against a much lower caliber of competition than Toro normally faces, and it's likely he's bumped up to a higher affiliate as soon as post-All-Star-break play resumes Friday.

  • Athletics' Armando Alvarez: Sent back to Triple-A

The Athletics optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old received his first big-league call-up June 22 and went on to appear in seven games with the Athletics prior to the All-Star break, batting .261 with a stolen base, six runs and one RBI. The utility player will get the chance to see more consistent playing time as he heads back to Las Vegas. The Athletics will announce a replacement for Alvarez on the 26-man active roster shortly before their next game Friday versus the Angels.
