Spencer Torkelson had a good 2023 campaign and all of his expected stats suggested his numbers should have been better, leading to many predicting a true breakout last season for the 2020 No. 1 overall pick. Instead, Torkelson took a huge step backward, getting demoted to Triple-A Toledo in early June following a .201/.266/.330 start. He rejoined the Tigers in August and flashed some promise that month, but a .677 OPS in September and a 45.8 percent strikeout rate in seven playoff games had fantasy managers scratching their heads again. All told, Torkelson's hard-hit rate went from the 94th percentile to the 45th percentile and his barrel rate went from the 89th percentile to the 37th percentile, all while his strikeout rate went up. He's still just 25, but anyone betting on a Torkelson bounce-back in 2025 would be making a bet purely on pedigree, as there wasn't much positive to glean from 2024. He also isn't guaranteed a spot on the big-league roster with Colt Keith moving to first base and Gleyber Torres taking over at second base.

After his disastrous 2024 season, It can be rather easy to forget that Torkelson has a 31-homer season in the majors under his belt, and he's still just 25 years old. He reminded everyone of his power with Friday's multi-homer game, bringing his OPS up to 1.181 this spring, although it's uncertain where exactly Torkelson fits in on this Tigers club that is expected to have Colt Keith at first base most days, Gleyber Torres at second and Kerry Carpenter at DH.

    Though Torkelson has been squeezed by some other players on the roster, he could still make the team as a weapon against left-handed pitching, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Colt Keith has been taking reps at first base, which has seemingly pushed Torkelson aside. However, the latter still offers plenty of pop, particularly against southpaws. The Tigers may want that skill as part of their bench when they break camp. Torkelson's fantasy value has certainly taken a hit following a disappointing 2024 in which he batted .219 with a .669 OPS, though he could slowly boost his stock if he makes the team and begins to carve out a regular role. The former No. 1 overall pick did launch 31 home runs in 2023, which points to some of his upside as a slugger, but making consistent contact has been a challenge at the MLB level.

Torres is expected to play second base for Detroit, and the feeling seems to be that Colt Keith is likelier to handle first base than third base, which would leave Torkelson without a spot in the lineup at least against right-handed pitching. Torkelson stumbled to a .669 OPS in the 2024 regular season and spent a chunk of the season in the minors. However, the former top prospect cranked 31 homers in 2023 and is still just 25, so he should have some trade value if the Tigers want to go that route.

After turning in a .129 ISO in 229 plate appearances with the Tigers prior to his demotion, Torkelson has shown only slightly more pop at against lesser pitching (.146 ISO), and his strikeout rate is actually six points higher than what he posted in the majors. Multiple reports after the Tigers' 8-4 win over the Red Sox on Sunday suggested that Torkelson was en route to Triple-A, but Detroit waited until shortly before Monday's series opener in Texas to make the move official. Torkelson slugged 31 home runs last season, and many anticipated another step forward in 2024, but it simply hasn't come together, with the former top prospect slashing just .201/.266/.330 with four home runs across 229 plate appearances. He'll be back in the majors eventually, but a reset at Toledo was deemed necessary.
