Hamilton and Kristian Campbell are the primary candidates to start at second base, and it's a hopeful sign for Campbell that he started Friday and will do so again Saturday. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he has a good idea of what they plan to do at the keystone but has not made it official. At one point during spring training it appeared that Hamilton was the frontrunner, but Campbell emerged as the leader over the final week of the Grapefruit League season.

Boston's decision to assign Vaughn Grissom to minor-league camp Wednesday leaves Hamilton and Kristian Campbell as the last two candidates standing for the starting gig at the keystone, and Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Chad Jennings of The Athletic that final roster decisions may not be made until 48 hours before Opening Day. "Maybe Monterrey," he said, referencing next week's pair of exhibition games in Mexico. "We're getting close, but we're not in a rush." Jennings' report also includes a roster projection that has Hamilton making the roster, either in a platoon at second base or as a utility player that gets a lot of playing time off the bench. Jennings also indicates that both the industry and the Red Sox seem to value Hamilton more than his fantasy profile suggests.
Hamilton has made the strongest case this spring to earn the starting job at second base, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Not only his spring numbers, which dwarf his competitors, Kristian Campbell and Vaughn Grissom, but also in how the manager speaks about Hamilton. "The experience matters, but at the same time we know the athlete," Cora said of Hamilton. "I don't want to get ahead of myself, all of them, they can play the position. It's just a matter of, how are we going to do it, what we're looking for." If Hamilton becomes the primary second baseman, he will be a hot fantasy draft commodity for those looking for steals. He stole 33 bags in 2024 for Boston and 50 or greater in three minor league seasons from 2021 to 2023. This supposes that Alex Bregman will play third base with Rafael Devers moving to DH.

A case can be made for any of the players competing at second base, but it all goes up into flames if Alex Bregman becomes the club's starter at second base. Hamilton immediately showed his value, leading off the first inning with a walk and a steal before scoring on a Marcelo Mayer single.
