Marlins' Seth Martinez: Clears waivers
Martinez cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Martinez was DFA'd by Miami on Wednesday to make room for Tyler Phillips but will officially remain with the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Martinez, 30, logged a 3.59 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 52.2 innings with the Astros last season, but it will be tougher for him to work back into the majors now that he no longer holds a spot on the 40-man roster.

Marlins' Seth Martinez: Loses roster spot
The Marlins designated Martinez for assignment Wednesday.
After being claimed off waivers from the Mariners on March 15, Martinez's stay on Miami's 40-man roster lasted less than two weeks with the Marlins swapping him out for right-hander Tyler Phillips, whom the team acquired from the Phillies on Wednesday. Martinez spent most of the 2024 season in the majors with Houston, serving in a middle-relief role while logging a 3.59 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 36:18 K:BB while collecting three wins, three holds and one save over 52.2 innings.

Marlins' Seth Martinez: Claimed by Fish
The Marlins claimed Martinez off waivers from Seattle on Saturday.
Less than two weeks after moving from Miami to Seattle via waiver claim, Martinez will now head right back to Miami. The 30-year-old righty allowed four runs in just two-thirds of an inning during his lone appearance of the spring but his career 3.93 ERA should give him a good chance of sticking around in the Marlins' bullpen. Andrew Nardi (back) was placed on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Mariners' Seth Martinez: Claimed by Seattle
The Mariners claimed Martinez off waivers from the Marlins on Sunday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Seattle will be Martinez's fourth team of the offseason after he finished the 2024 campaign with Houston. The 30-year-old made 44 regular-season appearances for the Astros last season and had a 3.59 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 36:18 K:BB across 52.2 innings.

Marlins' Seth Martinez: Designated for assignment
The Marlins designated Martinez for assignment Thursday.
Martinez was claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks last Thursday, and after just a week with the Marlins he'll lose his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Brett de Geus, who was picked up off waivers from Pittsburgh. Martinez finished last season with a 3.59 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over 52.2 regular-season innings with the Astros, so there could still be several teams willing to give him a spot on their 40-man instead.

Marlins' Seth Martinez: Claimed by Fish
The Marlins claimed Martinez off waivers from Arizona on Thursday.
The 30-year-old righty was pushed off the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster Monday to make room for Kendall Graveman (shoulder). Martinez spent all of last season with the Astros, turning in a 3.59 ERA and 1.27 WHIP alongside a 36:18 K:BB over 52.2 regular-season innings. Assuming he keeps a similar level of production during spring training, he'll have a good chance of winning a spot in Miami's Opening Day bullpen. Eury Perez (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

With Tayler Scott (back) headed for the injured list, the Astros will call upon Martinez to fill the open spot in the bullpen. Astros' Seth Martinez: Headed to Triple-A
The Astros optioned Martinez to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.
Martinez is one of the casualties as the Astros officially add trade acquisitions Yusei Kikuchi and Caleb Ferguson to the 26-man active roster. He holds a 2.92 ERA but an ugly 34:18 K:BB over 49.1 innings with the Astros this season.

Astros' Seth Martinez: Earns first save
Martinez picked up the save in a win over the Athletics on Wednesday, allowing two walks over two innings while striking out one.
Martinez entered the contest with a three-run lead in the top of the eighth and struck out the first batter on seven pitches before issuing a walk to JJ Bleday. The right-hander would quickly work his way through it, however, thanks to a double play ball in the following at-bat, before returning for the ninth. Despite also issuing a walk in the final frame, Martinez was able to wrap up the game with another scoreless inning to notch his first save of the season. It was a nice bounceback effort for the reliever, who had allowed three runs in his previous appearance on May 12 against the Tigers. Closer Josh Hader covered two innings Tuesday while Ryan Pressly, Bryan Abreu and Rafael Montero pitched two straight days, which opened up the save chance for Martinez.

Astros' Seth Martinez: Works effectively in long relief
Martinez (1-0) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out two across 3.2 scoreless innings to earn the win Monday against the Rangers.
The Astros pitching staff was put in a tough position after Framber Valdez (elbow) was scratched. That was exacerbated after Blair Henley managed only one out while allowing five runs, but Martinez followed him into the game and managed to tally his 11 outs on just 32 pitches. Martinez is capable of working multiple innings in relief but has never started a big-league game, so he'll almost certainly return to a more traditional role out of the bullpen moving forward.

He'll join the Astros' bullpen ahead of Friday's series opener in Arizona as Ryne Stanek goes on paternity leave. The 29-year-old Martinez has posted a 5.23 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 43 major-league innings this season.
