  • Padres' Michael King: Not making much progress

King (shoulder) is still resting and hasn't yet been able to ramp up his throwing, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. The team is prescribing rest as the main method of rehab for King, who was placed on the 15-day injured list May 25 due to a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder. While he reportedly started to play light catch one week ago, manager Mike Shildt noted that the club is still looking into the best way forward for the right-hander. "We're just in a holding pattern to see what it is and the best way to treat it, if there is a better way to treat it outside of just the rest," said Shildt. It would seem that King is still weeks away from a return, though an official timetable has yet to be established.

  • Padres' Michael King: Begins playing light catch

King said Sunday that he has begun playing light catch and has shown incremental improvement in his recovery from a right shoulder injury, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. King is dealing with a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder and suggested that he expects to return from the injured list within weeks rather than months. However, Padres manager Mike Shildt indicated King is in the early stages of recovery, so a clear timeline on the right-hander's return may not be available until he's further along in the rehab process.

  • Padres' Michael King: Lands on injured list

The Padres placed King on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right shoulder inflammation. The right-hander was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday due to shoulder stiffness, and he'll miss at least two more turns through the rotation due to the injury. King will be eligible to be reinstated June 6, though it's unclear if he'll be ready to return to the big-league mound at that point. Thanks to King's injury, Stephen Kolek should be able to stick in San Diego's rotation a bit longer, even with Yu Darvish (elbow) nearing a return from the IL.

  • Padres' Michael King: Scratched from start

King was scratched from his scheduled start Saturday against Atlanta due to right shoulder stiffness. The team hasn't yet specified the severity of King's injury, so it's currently unknown how long it will be before the 29-year-old takes the mound again. The Padres will now turn to their bullpen to get them through Saturday's contest, with Sean Reynolds getting the ball for the first inning.

  • Padres' Michael King: One out shy of quality start

King allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out eight over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Monday. King came up an out short of a quality start, and he was also denied the win after Robert Suarez's meltdown in the ninth inning. This was just the third time all year King has given up three runs, and he's yet to give up more than that in any start. He's now at a 2.32 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 56:16 K:BB over 50.1 innings across nine starts. The 29-year-old right-hander continues to be one of the best pitchers in the majors early in the campaign. He'll look to keep things rolling with a home start versus the Mariners this weekend.

  • Padres' Michael King: Delivers quality start

King did not factor in the decision during Tuesday's loss to the Yankees. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings while striking out two. The only damage against King came in the fourth inning when he served up a solo shot to Aaron Judge and an RBI single to Jasson Dominguez. King tied season lows with just two punchouts and five whiffs. He completed six innings for the first time since firing a complete game against the Rockies on April 13 and was in line for the victory before San Diego's bullpen gave up 10 runs in the seventh inning. King is sporting an impressive 2.22 ERA with a 48:14 K:BB through eight starts. He's currently in line to face the Angels at home next week.

  • Padres' Michael King: Earns fourth win

King (4-1) earned the win Wednesday over the Giants, allowing one run on three hits and a walk across 5.2 innings. He struck out six. King blanked the Giants through five innings before Jung Hoo Lee drove in a run with a two-out infield single in the sixth. The 29-year-old King has yet to allow more than three runs in a start this year while holding opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his last four outings. King's ERA now sits at 2.09 on the season with a 1.01 WHIP and 46:12 K:BB across seven starts (38.2 innings). He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, tentatively scheduled for next week against the Yankees.

  • Padres' Michael King: Tough-luck loss vs. Rays

King (3-1) took the loss Friday against the Rays after allowing one unearned run on four hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out nine. King was impressive despite being saddled with his first loss Friday, generating 14 whiffs en route to his third outing this year without giving up an earned run. The lone run scored by Taylor Walls went unearned due to a Xander Bogaerts throwing error to open the third inning, and the right-hander fanned at least seven in his third straight start. King boasts a 2.18 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB over 33 innings this season, setting him up as a strong fantasy option in a soft matchup versus the Pirates for his next scheduled outing.

  • Padres' Michael King: Fires two-hit shutout Sunday

King (3-0) threw a complete-game shutout in Sunday's 6-0 win over Colorado. He allowed two hits and one walk while striking out eight. The San Diego right-hander absolutely dominated the Rockies to collect his first career complete-game shutout. King threw 110 total pitches and generated a stellar 17 whiffs. The 29-year-old has put himself in the early NL Cy Young conversation with his start, pitching to a 2.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 24:8 K:BB across 22.1 innings. King is currently slated to make his next start at Houston this weekend.

  • Padres' Michael King: Notches second victory

King (2-0) earned the win over the Athletics on Monday, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two batters over 5.2 innings. King wasn't at his sharpest -- he pitched only one 1-2-3 frame and yielded a season-high eight hits -- but he did just enough to emerge with the victory. The right-hander got 12 whiffs on his 101 pitches but managed a season-low two punchouts. Two of King's three starts this season have come against the A's, and he's been less than impressive in both games, allowing a combined six runs over 8.1 frames while recording a meager 5:6 K:BB. However, King was dominant with 11 punchouts over five scoreless frames against Cleveland in his other start. He's next scheduled to take the mound at home versus Colorado.

  • Padres' Michael King: Fans 11 in Tuesday's win

King (1-0) picked up the win Tuesday, allowing two hits and a walk over five scoreless innings in a 7-0 rout of the Guardians. He struck out 11. The Padres' pitching staff continues to roll, racking up its third shutout in the last four games, and King's performance was maybe the best one yet from the team's rotation. The right-hander generated 18 swinging strikes among his 88 pitches (56 total strikes) and didn't let a runner get past second base. King sports a 14:5 K:BB through his first 7.2 innings of 2025, and he'll look to remain dominant in his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the A's.

  • Padres' Michael King: Rough start vs. Atlanta

King didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Atlanta, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks over 2.2 innings. He struck out three. It was a shaky season debut for King, who needed 76 pitches to record just eight outs. He was ultimately forced out of the game in the third inning after giving up a two-run homer to Ozzie Albies. King will look to bounce back in his second outing, currently scheduled for next week against Cleveland. The 29-year-old right-hander was impressive last season, going 13-9 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 201 strikeouts.

  • Padres' Michael King: Superb in final spring warmup

King tossed five scoreless innings in a Cactus League start against the Cubs on Friday, allowing one hit and striking out four batters. In his final spring outing -- and his first since being named San Diego's Opening Day starter -- King was royal on the mound, allowing a single to the first batter he faced and then retiring 15 straight hitters. The righty had an up-and-down spring, but he concluded it on a superb note and finished the exhibition slate with a 3.95 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 13:7 K:BB over 13.2 frames. King's next appearance is slated to take place next Thursday against Atlanta in the Padres' regular-season opener.

  • Padres' Michael King: Throws two frames in spring debut

King tossed two scoreless and hitless innings in Wednesday's Cactus League contest against Colorado, allowing two walks while striking out three batters. King didn't have great control in the outing -- only 17 of his 35 pitches were strikes -- but he didn't allow any hits and got six whiffs on the 11 swings against him. The right-hander is coming off a breakout 2024 campaign (his first with the Padres and as a full-time starter) during which he posted a 2.95 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 201:63 K:BB over 173.2 regular-season innings. King and Dylan Cease are expected to work as San Diego's top hurlers in 2025.

  • Padres' Michael King: Could start in Game 3

Manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Yu Darvish will start in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Dodgers and King will come in "soon thereafter," Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports. The Padres will roll with Dylan Cease and Darvish for Games 1 and 2 of the NLDS before likely turning to King for Game 3. King started in Game 1 of the wild-card series against Atlanta on Tuesday, and he was credited for the win after pitching seven scoreless innings while allowing five hits and striking out 12 batters. The Padres' rotation suffered a setback with Joe Musgrove being ruled out for the NLDS due to a UCL injury in his right elbow, which will require Tommy John surgery during the offseason.

  • Padres' Michael King: Getting nod in Game 1

King will start Game 1 of the wild-card series against Atlanta on Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. The Padres will ride the hot hand and deploy King in their first postseason action, as he posted a 2.11 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 40 strikeouts in his last seven starts of the regular season (38.1 innings). Joe Musgrove will get the call in Game 2 and Dylan Cease would draw the start in Game 3 if necessary.

  • Padres' Michael King: Picks up 13th win

King (13-9) got the win over the Dodgers on Tuesday, allowing one run (zero earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out three over five innings. The Dodgers made King work hard to get through five innings and he was done after 95 pitches. King is on a miraculous run of allowing three runs or fewer in each of his last 14 starts and now sits at a 2.95 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 201:63 K:BB in 173.2 innings. He's tentatively lined up to make a start this weekend against the Diamondbacks but it's also possible the Padres skip him in order to save him up for the postseason.

  • Padres' Michael King: Hit with tough loss

King (12-9) took the loss against Seattle on Wednesday, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over five innings while striking out six. King cruised through the first two innings before walking Miguel Rojas with one out in the third and then hitting Victor Robles with a pitch to put two runners on. The right-hander would then go on to surrender two RBI singles in the frame, leading to three runs coming across for Seattle -- though only one of those runs would count against King on account of a fielding error by Jake Cronenworth. King still managed to make it through five innings for the 12th time in his last 13 outings while generating 13 whiffs on the night. He now carries a 1.64 ERA through two starts in September, and King has also recorded at least six strikeouts in nine of his last 10 starts.

  • Padres' Michael King: Defeats Giants

King (12-8) allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win over the Giants on Friday. King rebounded from losing his last two starts to turn in a quality start. A Michael Conforto solo shot in the sixth inning accounted for the lone run on his line. This was the 13th time in 28 outings (27 starts) in which King was able to limit an opponent to one run or fewer. He's now at a 3.10 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 185:58 K:BB through 156.2 innings. King is expected to draw a rematch with the Giants next week in San Francisco.

  • Padres' Michael King: Dazzles with 10 strikeouts

King (10-6) got the win over the Pirates on Tuesday after allowing seven hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out 10 without issuing a walk. King posted his fourth outing of the season with at least 10 strikeouts and his fourth of at least six innings with zero earned runs allowed. He struck out the side in the second and fourth innings and allowed the Pirates to put runners into scoring position only twice. Since May 1, King is second in the majors among all starting pitchers with a 3.6 fWAR and has a 1.91 ERA over his last seven starts. He has just two starts since May 4 with fewer than five strikeouts and has been a massive addition to the San Diego rotation after coming over in the Juan Soto trade. For the year, King owns a 3.19 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 161:47 K:BB in 135.1 innings. He lines up to face the Twins at home to begin next week.
