Player Outlook
Justyn-Henry Malloy saw time at third base, left field and right field at Triple-A last season, but he is a below-average defender at all three spots and fits best at designated hitter. That's a problem on a roster that has a locked in everyday first baseman (Spencer Torkelson) and also projects to include foundational bat-first players like Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith. Malloy, who turns 24 in February, slashed .277/.417/.474 with 23 home runs in 135 games at Triple-A. His 102.7 mph 90th percentile exit velocity, 109.9 mph maxEV, and 29.4 Hard% were not high-end marks for a potential designated hitter, but Malloy has had an OBP north of .400 at every stop above Single-A. Similarly to former Tigers DH Victor Martinez, he could potentially provide enough offensive value to DH even if he's not hitting more than 20 homers per season, but that involves Malloy essentially maxing out as a hitter. He doesn't need to be added to the 40-man roster until after the 2024 season for Rule 5 draft protection, so it will be up to him to improve enough defensively to force the issue this season.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Homers again in win

Malloy went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Monday's 8-2 win over the Guardians. Malloy opened the scoring with a two-run home run off Carlos Carrasco in the first inning. The rookie has now homered on back-to-back days and has seven long balls in 123 plate appearances this year. He also struck out three times Monday, bringing his season total to 42, but he has still managed an impressive .279/.380/.605 slash line in July.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Enters lineup Saturday

Malloy will serve as Detroit's designated hitter and No. 2 batter in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays. Malloy didn't appear in Friday's 5-4 win while the Blue Jays brought righty Chris Bassitt to the mound, but the rookie will crack the lineup Saturday versus southpaw Yusei Kikuchi. Malloy has shown decent pop in a part-time role, hitting five home runs across 33 games, though he's batting just .219 and has struck out in 34.5 percent of his plate appearances. He'll need to be a bit more consistent if he wants to earn more playing time against righties.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Getting break Sunday

Malloy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Dodgers. Malloy will get a breather in the Tigers' final game before the All-Star break after he had started in each of the team's last five contests while going 5-for-18 with a home run, a triple, two walks, three runs and two RBI. Riley Greene will get a day out of the outfield and will serve as Detroit's designated hitter while Malloy takes a seat.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Homers in return to lineup

Malloy went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 9-8, 10-inning loss to the Guardians. Malloy had been out of the lineup the last two days, but he returned with a bang Tuesday, popping his fifth home run of the season across 28 games. While the power has been nice, the rookie is batting just .195 with a 35 percent strikeout rate. Malloy is taking his lumps, and he may not see consistent playing time as a result.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Sitting in second straight

Malloy is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. Malloy will take a seat for the second day in a row against a right-handed pitcher (Gavin Williams) while the Tigers roll with Mark Canha as their designated hitter. Though his usage of late hasn't been encouraging, Malloy has performed passably since getting the call to the big leagues June 3. Through his first 27 MLB games, Malloy is hitting just .195 with a 36 percent strikeout rate, though he's provided some pop (four home runs, two doubles) and is walking in 10.1 percent of his plate appearances. He'll likely see his playing time dip when the Tigers are at full strength, but unless his production drops further, Malloy should at least have a semi-regular spot in the lineup until Detroit gets Kerry Carpenter (back) and/or Parker Meadows (hamstring) back from the injured list.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Swipes bag in big win

Malloy went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 9-2 win over the Twins. Malloy singled in the third for his only hit of the game and swiped second base for the first steal of his MLB career. Malloy does have a hit in four straight games now, but overall, it's been a struggle for the 24-year-old to get acclimated to big-league pitching so far. He's slashing .197/.284/.394 with four homers, eight RBI, eight runs and a 7:31 BB:K in 81 plate appearances.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Goes deep again Tuesday

Malloy went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Twins. Malloy is starting to settle in at the MLB level, as he blasted his fourth career home run and second in as many games. The rookie was batting .158 through his first 13 contests, but he's upped that to a more respectable .241 over his last 11 games. There's still room for improvement, though if Malloy can continue to display good power, fantasy managers will deal with a lower batting average.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Not starting Friday

Malloy is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Angels. Malloy will begin Friday's contest in the dugout after going 0-for-3 with one strikeout in Thursday's 5-0 loss. Over his last 10 games, he's gone just 2-for-25 with a 40.7 percent strikeout rate. Colt Keith will serve as the designated hitter Friday while Andy Ibanez starts at second base against Angels right-hander Zach Plesac.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Sitting Sunday

Malloy is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the White Sox. Malloy will take a breather Sunday after starting in the first two games of the series, going 1-for-6 with a double and one run scored. Riley Greene will serve as the designated hitter Sunday while Akil Baddoo starts in left field against White Sox right-hander Jonathan Cannon.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Exiting starting nine Wednesday

Malloy is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Malloy will take a seat for the series finale after he started the first two games in Atlanta while going 0-for-6 with a walk and four strikeouts. Mark Canha played first base in Tuesday's game but will serve as the Tigers' designated hitter Wednesday while Malloy hits the bench.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Getting Sunday off

Malloy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Malloy will head to the bench after he had served as the Tigers' designated hitter for each of the past three games while going 3-for-12 with a home run, a double and three RBI. The 24-year-old is providing a decent amount of power (three extra-base hits) in his first taste of the majors, but he's hitting just .188 with a 38.5 percent strikeout rate through 39 plate appearances. Malloy's hold on an everyday role could be tenuous, and he may be headed back to Triple-A Toledo if his playing time slips in the days to come.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Records first MLB home run

Malloy went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Rangers. While it was an ugly night for the Tigers, it was a great night for Malloy. The rookie delivered his first MLB hit in the top of the sixth inning, and it also happened to be his first MLB home run. Malloy added a single a few innings later for good measure. The 24-year-old is a promising prospect with some power upside, and he figures to see regular playing time at least for the foreseeable future, giving him an opportunity to show what he can do.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Added to roster, in lineup Monday

The Tigers selected Malloy's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Monday. He'll start at designated hitter and will bat sixth Monday against the Rangers in his MLB debut. The 24-year-old has slashed .253/.410/.473 with six home runs and three stolen bases over 195 plate appearances this season with Toledo. Malloy has made a full-time move to the outfield in 2024 after previously spending some time at the infield corners. The right-handed batter should receive at least semi-regular starts between the corner outfield and DH.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Set for promotion

The Tigers are expected to call up Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Malloy will join the Tigers ahead of their three-game road series against the Rangers. The 24-year-old will be set to make his major-league debut after producing a .253 average with six home runs, 27 RBI, 23 runs scored and three stolen bases over 45 games with Toledo this season.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Back in action Sunday

Malloy (undisclosed) will start at designated hitter and bat third for Triple-A Toledo in Sunday's game against St. Paul. Malloy is back in action for Toledo for the first time since May 3 after missing more than a week with an undisclosed injury. The 24-year-old outfielder has maintained a .279/.424/.462 slash line over 132 plate appearances on the season.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Still banged up

Malloy hasn't played at Triple-A Toledo since Friday due to an undisclosed injury, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported Tuesday Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Malloy is "banged up a little bit" but didn't disclose any specifics regarding the injury. The injury could have kept Malloy from a chance at the big-league roster, considering Ryan Vilade was called up by the Tigers on Tuesday to replace Parker Meadows, who will join Malloy down at Triple-A.

  • Tigers' Justyn-Henry Malloy: Heating up again

Malloy is hitting .329 with a .424 OBP, five home runs, two steals and a 20:14 K:BB over his last 20 games for Triple-A Toledo. He had a bit of a slump from the middle of May until the middle of June, but Malloy has now had multiple red-hot stretches as well. Malloy started the year playing third base for the Mud Hens, but he has been playing the outfield corners over the past few weeks, clearing a path for Colt Keith at third base.
