Top Noah Schultz News

  • White Sox's Noah Schultz: Reassigned to minors camp

The White Sox reassigned Schultz to minor-league camp Thursday.

Schultz never had a chance to make the Opening Day roster but made a nice impression during his two Cactus League appearances, tossing three scoreless frames. The top prospect is likely to begin the season back in the Double-A Binghamton rotation and could push for a major-league debut before the end of the year.

  • White Sox's Noah Schultz: Facing Padres next week

Schultz will make his Cactus League debut Feb. 26 against the Padres, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

The White Sox were very careful with Schultz's workload in 2024, but he's been throwing live bullpen sessions earlier this season and will be challenged with taking on a bigger workload in 2025. Last year, Schultz never pitched beyond four innings, all the way through the Southern League postseason. However, this year those restraints are being taken off and he's moving into a true five-man rotation. With that in mind, Schultz focused on strength and conditioning this past offseason. He didn't add to his repertoire, instead focusing on throwing his cutter and four-seam fastball more to keep hitters guessing -- Schultz's slider is his best pitch. There's a chance Schultz creates a significant buzz this spring, which could set the stage for a big-league debut this summer.

  • White Sox's Noah Schultz: Receives spring training invite

The White Sox have extended Schultz an invitation to big-league camp during spring training.

Hagen Smith will also be in big-league camp, as the White Sox are giving their top two prospects and two of the better pitching prospects in baseball a look in spring training. The 21-year-old Schultz is coming off a dominant 2024 campaign split between High-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham, collecting a 2.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 115:24 K:BB over 88.1 innings. He's still being built up to handle a full workload, but it's not out of the question Schultz pushes to debut before the end of the 2025 season.

  • White Sox's Noah Schultz: In cruise control at Double-A

Schultz has a 0.61 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 34:13 K:BB in 29.2 innings across his last eight starts for Double-A Birmingham.

Given that Schultz only allowed an earned run in two of those eight starts and didn't allow more than one earned run in any outing over that stretch, it's pretty clear that he can handle three or four innings against Double-A hitters. However, he hasn't recorded more than 12 outs in a start all year, as the White Sox have clearly capped his per-start workload in an effort to keep him healthy all season. Schultz's 70-grade slider is his bread and butter, so it's not a given that he'll have the same success as he attempts to log five or six innings in starts against better competition next season. Improving his third-pitch changeup will be the top priority for the 6-foot-9 southpaw this offseason.

  • White Sox's Noah Schultz: Moving up to Double-A

Schultz was promoted to Double-A Birmingham on Sunday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Schultz has produced a 3.95 ERA and 0.91 WHIP with 42 strikeouts over 27.1 innings in seven starts with Single-A Winston-Salem so far this season, and he'll now move up another step in Chicago's farm system. The left-hander was selected in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the White Sox, and he's considered one of the organization's top pitching prospects.
