In another era, Will Brennan might have been viewed differently given that he has put up high batting averages consistently throughout his time in professional baseball. However, modern fans and front offices can see that it's a rather empty batting average. Brennan managed five home runs and 13 steals in 455 big-league plate appearances last season at the age of 25. Worst of all is the fact that Brennan has been averse to drawing walks, managing just a 3.6 BB% and .308 OBP through 500 plate appearances in the majors to date. He's a quality defender in right field and projects to start there for the Guardians on Opening Day, but there will be pressure on him to provide more offensively in his second full season.

  • Guardians' Will Brennan: To IL with rib cage injury

The Guardians placed Brennan on the 10-day injured list Thursday with rib cage inflammation. Brennan last played Monday and evidently must have tweaked his ribs area during that game in Baltimore. He will be eligible to return late next week, but with the severity of the strain not known, it's uncertain how long he'll actually be sidelined. Daniel Schneemann, Gabriel Arias and Jhonkensy Noel could all pick up more at-bats while Brennan is out.

  • Guardians' Will Brennan: Racks up three more hits

Brennan went 3-for-4 in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Astros. Brennan's playing time has steadied lately with the Guardians facing five straight right-handed pitchers. The outfielder's results are still all over the place -- Brennan has five multi-hit efforts and three home runs over his last nine games, but he's without a hit in the other four contests during that span. His trio of singles Thursday lifted his batting average from .228 to .253, and he's added four homers, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored and two stolen bases through 90 plate appearances on the year. Brennan made the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. That spot is not guaranteed to him this season, as Estevan Florial and Ramon Laureano will also compete for playing time there.
