Rangers' Jacob Latz: Claims save in long relief
Latz (undisclosed) struck out three and allowed two hits and no walks over three scoreless innings en route to earning a save in Tuesday's 10-2 win over the Orioles.
In his previous appearance during Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Orioles, Latz was lifted after 2.1 innings due to an apparent injury, but the Rangers felt comfortable enough with his health to turn to him in an extended relief outing two days later. Latz needed 43 pitches to record his nine outs and was credited with the first save of his career. The left-hander previously made a pair of starts in June but will likely work out of the bullpen moving forward following Nathan Eovaldi's recent return from the injured list.

Rangers' Jacob Latz: Exits Sunday's game
Latz was removed in the ninth inning of his relief appearance in Sunday's game against the Mariners due to an unspecified reason, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. He struck out four and allowed one hit and one walk over 2.1 scoreless innings.
After taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning while working as a starter in his previous appearance Tuesday in Baltimore, Latz ended up shifting back to the bullpen this weekend. He entered Sunday's contest in the top of the seventh and worked two scoreless frames before he was lifted in the top of the ninth after striking out a batter and giving up a ground rule double. Wilson relays that Latz was dealing with an illness Saturday and may have been dealing with some fatigue, but the Rangers will likely elaborate further on Latz's early exit once Sunday's contest concludes.

Rangers' Jacob Latz: Brilliant in no-decision
Latz came away with a no-decision in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Orioles, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks over six-plus innings. He struck out four.
The southpaw had a no-hitter going through six innings as the Rangers built a 3-0 lead, but after Latz gave up a single to Ramon Laureano and walked Gunnar Henderson to begin the seventh, he had to watch from the dugout as Chris Martin served up three straight home runs to erase his chance at a win. Latz has been outstanding over his last five appearances (two starts), posting a 3.50 ERA and 0.94 WHIP in 18 innings. His 14:8 K:BB over that stretch is less impressive, and suggests that he likely wouldn't sustain his current level of success if he were to receive a longer run in the rotation. With Nathan Eovaldi (triceps) on track to return from the injured list this weekend, Latz will likely head back to the bullpen.

Latz was technically available out of the bullpen for Monday's 6-0 loss to the Orioles, but the Rangers stayed away from him so that he'll be available to take the hill Tuesday for his second start of the season. The left-hander tossed 5.2 innings and 82 pitches in his most recent relief appearance Thursday against the Royals, so Latz will likely be operating as a traditional starter Tuesday rather than leading off a bullpen game. He's expected to head back to the bullpen after Tuesday's outing, as the Rangers are likely to get Nathan Eovaldi (triceps) back from the injured list later this week.

Rangers' Jacob Latz: Tentatively lined up for Tuesday

Dane Dunning is also an option to start Tuesday, but the Rangers appear prepared to have Latz open the contest as long as he isn't needed out of the bullpen in Monday's series opener. The Rangers are without multiple members of the rotation due to injuries, and as a result, the team has resorted to three bullpen games over the last 10 days. Latz, who was primarily a starter in the minors, entered the game behind opening pitcher Shawn Armstrong and ended up making his lengthiest appearance since April 2022, when he was in the rotation at Triple-A Round Rock.. The Rangers reinstated Latz (forearm) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Round Rock.
Forearm tightness has kept Latz on the shelf since early August. He gave up five earned runs over one-third of an inning during his first rehab outing Aug. 18, but he's since allowed just two runs across 7.2 frames in the minors.
