  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Yet to resume baseball activities

Perez (back) has yet to resume baseball activities, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Perez is still in the recovery process after being given a pair of cortisone shots to combat lumbar spine inflammation. He's already been moved to the 60-day injured list, and it's not clear when he'll be ready to begin baseball activities.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Gets another cortisone injection

Perez (back) was given the second of two scheduled cortisone injections Friday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Perez is recovering from lumbar spine inflammation and it's not clear when he will be ready to resume baseball activities. The outfielder is not expected back until sometime in May.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Moved to 10-day IL

The Tigers placed Perez (back) on the 10-day injured list Thursday. Perez spent most of spring training rehabbing his lower-back inflammation. Most recently, he received an injection in his back and has already been ruled out for at least another month by president of baseball operations Scott Harris. With Matt Vierling (shoulder) also out, Ryan Kreidler is the favorite to start in center field to begin Detroit's season.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Out one month with back injury

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said Monday that Perez is scheduled to receive an injection in his lower back this week and will be sidelined for at least a month, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. He joins Parker Meadows (arm) and Matt Vierling (shoulder) on the shelf, as the Tigers' outfield depth will really be tested early on in the season. Recently signed Manuel Margot is a new option for Detroit and the club has also brought back Ryan Kreidler from minor-league camp.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Back in action Saturday

Perez (back) is starting in center field and batting leadoff in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. The 25-year-old has been dealing with lower-back tightness over the past week but will rejoin the starting nine Saturday after recently receiving a cortisone injection. Perez is expected to start in center or right field Opening Day for the Tigers since Parker Meadows (arm) and Matt Vierling (shoulder) will be unavailable to begin the season.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Gets injection, should avoid IL

Perez received a cortisone injection in his back Friday but is expected to be ready for Opening Day, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. The 25-year-old has been sidelined for the past week due to lower-back tightness, and he received the cortisone injection after a couple failed attempts to return to game action this week. Parker Meadows (arm) and Matt Vierling (shoulder) are poised to miss the start of the season, so Perez should play a significant role for the Tigers to begin the campaign, assuming he can avoid further complications.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Ruled out through Friday

Perez (back) isn't in the Tigers' Grapefruit League lineup Thursday against the Yankees and also isn't listed on their travel roster for Friday's game versus the Pirates, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Perez hasn't played since March 2 due to lower-back tightness and it would appear his return to action is not imminent. If healthy, the 25-year-old should be in line to play a lot early in the season while Matt Vierling (shoulder) and perhaps Parker Meadows (arm) are out. However, it would seem Perez's own availability for Opening Day is in peril.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Remains out Wednesday

Perez (back) remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. The expectation was that Perez would return to the lineup Wednesday after sitting out for over a week due to lower-back tightness. However, the 25-year-old remains out, and it's fair to question at this point whether Perez will have enough time to get ready for the start of the season. Opening Day is just over two weeks away and Perez has logged only 14 at-bats this spring.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Battling back tightness

The Tigers announced Friday that Perez is dealing with lower-back tightness but is expected to participate in full baseball activities this weekend, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Perez hasn't seen the field since Sunday due to the injury, but he appears to be trending in the right direction after taking a few days to rest up. If healthy, the 25-year-old has a strong chance to begin the season with a regular role for the Tigers since Matt Vierling (shoulder) will begin the campaign on the injured list.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Drives in runs Tuesday

Perez went 1-for-2 with two walks, a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 2-1 win over the Rays. Perez had the game's key hit, delivering a ground-rule double in the bottom of the fifth inning that plated both Detroit runs. The 24-year-old rookie returned from the injured list on Sept. 12 after missing about a month due to an oblique strain, and he's seemingly settled back in as the team's regular right fielder in the middle of a playoff race. Like many young players, Perez has had some ups and downs during his debut campaign, though he's flashed signs of promise for future seasons.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Starting rehab assignment

Perez (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Perez has been sidelined since Aug. 10 with a strained left oblique, but he took live batting practice over the weekend without issue to gain clearance to play in rehab games. The young switch-hitter shouldn't need too many rehab at-bats before returning to the Tigers' active roster.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Exits with injury

Perez was removed from Friday's game against the Giants due to left abdominal tightness, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Perez drew a walk and struck out before being pulled from the game in the fourth inning. He'll presumably undergo further testing to determine the severity of his injury. Bligh Madris entered as the 24-year-old's replacement, but Parker Meadows could begin to see more work against left-handed pitching if Perez is forced to miss any time.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Getting rest Monday

Perez is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians. Perez will get a breather for the first time since July 13, when the Tigers' played their penultimate game before the All-Star break. He had opened the Tigers' second-half schedule with a .786 OPS through his first seven contests, but he'll hit the bench after going hitless in 12 at-bats during the club's three-game series with Minnesota over the weekend.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Homers in loss

Perez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Guardians. Perez went deep for the second time in the last five games and seventh time this season. The rookie has enjoyed a fairly productive July, as he has four home runs and nine RBI in 18 games this month to go along with a .773 OPS. Perez has been a pleasant surprise for the Tigers, and the 24-year-old should continue to receive ample playing time as the team focuses on his development.

Perez has become a solid contributor over his last 10 games, hitting .314 (11-for-35) with two homers, six runs scored, and five RBI. The Tigers rookie is now slashing .264/.317/.408 with six homers, 38 runs scored and 24 RBI across 302 plate appearances this season.

Perez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Dodgers. Perez started the previous five contests and will head to the bench after going 6-for-21 with a double, a stolen base, an RBI and three runs. Ryan Vilade, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo on Friday, will start in right field.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Slugs pinch-hit homer

Perez went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 5-3 win against Cincinnati. Perez pinch hit for Ryan Kreidler in the eighth inning and came through with a two-run blast that knotted the score. The long ball was his second over his past four contests and his fifth across 69 games on the campaign. Perez has never been known as a big power threat, though he did go deep 14 times in 94 contests in the minors in 2022.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Batting leadoff Sunday

Perez is starting in right field and batting first in Sunday's game against the Brewers. Perez wasn't in the starting lineup Saturday, though he did appear as a pinch hitter, and he'll be back in there Sunday. The 24-year-old rookie is 0-for-12 across his last four games, which has lowered his batting average from .268 to .247. Despite the recent slump, Perez should continue to see semi-regular playing time moving forward, mixing in with Riley Greene, Matt Vierling and Akil Baddoo in Detroit's outfield.

  • Tigers' Wenceel Perez: Idle Saturday

Perez isn't in the Tigers' lineup Saturday versus Milwaukee. Perez has gone 0-for-11 at the plate across his last three games, and the Tigers will now give him a chance to regroup. Justyn-Henry Malloy, Riley Greene and Akil Baddoo will start across the outfield while Perez sits.
