Player Outlook
There have been some incredible peaks and valleys in Jack Suwinski's young career. He's endured not one but two 0-for-29 stretches in his two seasons, the first earning him a trip back to the minors in 2022. The Pirates took a different approach to Suwinski's prolonged slump in 2023, instead giving him a few days off to work with his hitting coaches, which worked as Suwinski finished strong in September. Through it all he led Pittsburgh in home runs with 26, in turn becoming the fastest player in franchise history to reach 40 career homers. Suwinski improved against left-handed pitching in his sophomore season, though a .200/.295/.300 line is still hardly anything to write home about. He can also run as evidenced by his 81st percentile sprint speed and 13 steals in 15 attempts last season, so the power/speed potential is here if you can stomach the ups and downs and occasional days off against southpaws.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Idle against righty

Suwinski is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. The lefty-hitting Suwinski was on the bench for Saturday's 4-1 win while the Phillies sent southpaw Cristopher Sanchez to the hill, but Suwinski's absence from the lineup Sunday against Philadelphia right-hander Tyler Phillips comes as more of a surprise. Connor Joe will draw a start in the outfield in place of Suwinski, who has gone 1-for-16 with three walks and four strikeouts over his last six contests.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Swats homer, steals base Tuesday

Suwinski went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, an additional RBI, one stolen base and two total runs scored in Tuesday's 12-2 win over the Brewers. Suwinski contributed an RBI single during the Pirates' six-run sixth inning and added a solo shot in the eighth. The outfielder is 8-for-24 (.333) with three homers and six RBI over eight games in July, though he remains limited to a strong-side platoon role, sharing center field with Michael Taylor. Despite the recent heater, Suwinski is slashing just .186/.264/.339 through 247 plate appearances this year, adding nine homers, 26 RBI, 27 runs scored and six steals.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Power ticking up

Suwinski went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk Friday against the Mets. Suwinski has had a disappointing season, but he's shown signs of turning things around in a very limited recent sample. Friday's long ball was his eighth of the season, and he now has three extra-base hits across his last four games. Suwinski still has just a .148 ISO and 67 wRC+ for the season, though he's remained in the starting lineup against righties.

Suwinski went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run in a 7-4 loss to the Cardinals on Tuesday. Suwinski singled in the third inning and put the Pirates on the board with a three-run home run in the fifth. He later added another single in the seventh to stay perfect at the plate Tuesday. This was the outfielder's first three-hit effort of the season and his first home run since June 14. On the year, he is hitting a lowly .180 with seven home runs, 23 RBI, 24 runs scored and five steals over 225 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Slugs key homer

Suwinski went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Friday against the Rockies. Suwinski went yard in the seventh inning to give the Pirates a couple insurance runs. It was his second home run in eight games since returning from Triple-A Indianapolis, though he's gone just 4-for-24 with a 48.4 percent strikeout rate in that span. Despite those struggles, Suwinski remains the primary center fielder and has started eight of Pittsburgh's last 10 games.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Bowing out against righty

Suwinski is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Michael Taylor will replace Suwinski in center field.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Homers in return to majors

Suwinski went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Tuesday against the Dodgers. Suwinski was recalled to the majors Tuesday after Ji Hwan Bae (wrist) was placed on the injured list and Michael Taylor on the paternity list. Suwinski immediately returned to the lineup, manning center field while hitting ninth. He accounted for the only run of the contest with a solo home run in the third inning, a positive sign after he managed only four homers across his first 49 games before being demoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on May 22.

  • Pirates' Jack Suwinski: Bound for Triple-A

The Pirates optioned Suwinski to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. The lefty-hitting Suwinski has mostly operated as a strong-side platoon outfielder this season, but even against right-handed pitching, he's struggled to a .144/.256/.261 slash line over 129 plate appearances. The Pirates will send Suwinski to Indianapolis with the hope that he refines his approach and regains some confidence at the plate, but a return to the big leagues likely won't be imminent until he starts producing at Triple-A. In the meantime, Suwinski's absence could reopen more playing time at first base for Rowdy Tellez while Connor Joe takes on more starts out of the corner outfield.

Suwinski will be a candidate to enter mid-game if the Giants turn to a right-hander out of the bullpen.

Suwinski went 1-for-3 with two walks and two stolen bases during Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs. The left-hander has almost exclusively started against right-handed pitching, with 107 of his 129 plate appearances coming against opposite-handed throwers. However, Suwinski is slashing just .129/.234/.304 against righties this season.
