  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Done for season

The Mariners placed Miller on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to a blister on his right index finger. In his last appearance Monday against the Astros, Miller picked up his final win of the season as he allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five over seven scoreless innings. The 26-year-old right-hander ended the year strong with four quality starts in a row, and in 12 games after the All-Star break, he posted a 1.89 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 73:16 K:BB over 71.1 innings. Miller will finish the 2024 regular season with a 12-8 record over 31 starts with a 2.94 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 171:45 K:BB across 180.1 innings. Emerson Hancock was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move, and he will start Saturday against the Athletics.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Dominates in 12th win

Miller (12-8) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Astros on Monday. While Miller walked multiple batters for the fifth time in his last seven starts, that was about the only complaint anyone could register with this performance. He's rattled off four straight quality starts, though a lack of run support has caused him to win just two of those games. Miller has kept runs off the board in nine of his 31 starts this season, pitching to a 2.94 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 171:45 K:BB through 180.1 innings. He's tentatively projected to make one more start at home versus the Athletics in the regular season, though it's possible the Mariners call up a spot starter if they are officially eliminated from playoff contention before Miller's turn comes up again.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Fans eight in quality start

Miller did not factor into the decision in an extra-inning loss to the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and four walks over six innings. He struck out eight. The Yankees got to Miller for one run in the second after the right-hander allowed a one-out walk, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Anthony Rizzo. However, the 26-year-old would recover nicely, hurling four scoreless frames before being relieved by Troy Taylor to open the seventh. Miller was unable to come away with the win, but he was able to log his third consecutive quality start while striking out at least seven batters for the third time in his last five outings. He now carries a 1.99 ERA in September (four starts) to go along with a 23:10 K:BB.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Fans 10 in 10th victory

Miller (10-7) earned the win over Tampa Bay on Monday, allowing one run on two hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters over seven innings. Miller was dominant in the outing, racking up 14 whiffs and tying a season high with 10 punchouts. The only run he allowed came on a Josh Lowe solo homer in the second inning, and Miller surrendered just one other hit (a single by Lowe in the fifth). The right-handed hurler has been outstanding of late, allowing just three runs (all on solo homers) over his past four starts covering 24 frames.. Miller has broken through in his second big-league campaign -- he ranks 11th among qualified starters with a 3.23 ERA and fourth with a 0.98 WHIP while registering a 143:33 K:BB over 150.2 innings.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Only completes four frames

Miller did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five in four innings. Miller started out excellent by striking out the side in the first but needed 92 pitches to complete four frames, with 51 of those pitches coming in the third and fourth innings. Miller was able to hold the Dodgers scoreless through three but was victimized by the home-run ball in the fourth when he gave up solo shots to Gavin Lux and Max Muncy. Those were the first two home runs he's given up in four August starts and he's only given up four homers total since the start of July. The 25-year-old owns a 3.32 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 133:33 K:BB in 143.2 innings and lines up to face the Rays at home to begin next week.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Excellent again in no-decision

Miller didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's 2-1 loss to the Tigers. He allowed just two hits while striking out nine over seven scoreless innings. Miller was dominant Tuesday, though he'd ultimately come away with a no-decision after the Mariners' bullpen gave up two runs in the eighth. The 25-year-old right-hander has delivered 13 scoreless innings over his last two starts, allowing just five hits while striking out 15 in that span. Overall, Miller is 9-7 this year with a 3.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 128:31 K:BB across 139.2 innings. He'll have a tougher matchup in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week on the road against the Dodgers.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Can't make it through five frames

Miller did not factor into the decision in an extra-inning win over the Phillies on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over 4.1 innings while striking out four. The Phillies' lineup put Miller to task early, posting back-to-back hits to open the contest before tagging the right-hander for one run in the first. Miller then managed to keep Philadelphia off the board over the next three innings, but he had to be relieved by Tayler Saucedo with one out in the fifth after failing to retire three of the first four batters he faced in the frame. The 25-year-old Miller had gone at least six innings in three consecutive starts coming into Saturday's no-decision, while the four runs were the most he's surrendered since June 23 against the Marlins (span of five starts). On a positive note, Miller has issued only two walks since the start of July while posting 21 strikeouts over that stretch.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Strong start goes to waste

Miller allowed three hits and struck out five without walking a batter over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Angels on Monday. Miller hadn't pitched since July 10 due to the All-Star break, but he was sharp, throwing 62 of 94 pitches for strikes. This was his fifth scoreless outing of the year, as well as his third such effort of at least seven innings, but the Mariners' bullpen couldn't hold the lead he gave it. Miller is putting together a solid sophomore campaign with a 3.41 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 103:29 K:BB through 116 innings over 20 starts, though he's a bit unlucky to have just a 7-7 record. The 25-year-old's next start is projected to be another favorable matchup on the road versus the White Sox.

He also didn't surrender a home run for the third time in his last four starts and fanned six batters in three of his six starts this month. Despite the solid outing, Miller was charged with his seventh loss Saturday and has now lost two straight after previously winning three decisions in a row (over five starts).

The 24-year-old Miller has been solid this year overall, holding opponents to two runs or fewer in six of his nine starts. He sports a 3.08 ERA with a 0.99 WHIP and 52:16 K:BB across 52.2 innings this season. Miller is currently lined up for a tough road matchup with the Yankees in his next outing.

Miller's three-game quality start streak was thus snapped, as was his three-game win streak. He'll try to get back on track the next time he takes the mound, which lines up for early next week versus Atlanta.

  • Mariners' Bryce Miller: Introducing splitter in '24

Miller added a splitter to his repertoire this offseason, Brandon Gustafson of 710 ESPN Seattle reports. Miller picked up some valuable experience last season beginning with his May 2 MLB debut, finishing the 2023 campaign with an 8-7 record, 4.32 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 25 starts. The right-hander's fastball clocked in at an impressive 95.1 mph as well, and while he primarily relied on his four-seam fastball and a sinker/two-seamer as a rookie, he decided to add the splitter after seeing rotation mates Logan Gilbert and George Kirby enjoy plenty of success with it last season. "I thought it was something that would be really good for how I throw and for what I needed," Miller said. " ... It took me a month or two just to find a grip that I was comfortable with and one that I was able to get consistent shapes with."

The rookie right-hander is now at a 3.90 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 95:21 K:BB through 101.2 innings over 19 starts.
