It wasn't always pretty, but Spencer Steer turned in a 20-20 season while leading the Reds with 92 RBI. He seemed to run out of gas at the end, limping to a .165 average in September, which dragged him down to just .225 for the season. Steer's strikeout rate remained identical to his 2023 mark at 20.9% and he added a couple points to his hard-hit rate. However, his BABIP cratered from .318 to .260. His relatively pull-heavy approach from the right side makes him a nice fit in Great American Ball Park, but his batted-ball profile is underwhelming and the band box doesn't completely hide his flaws. While he's now lost third-base eligibility in fantasy baseball, Steer retains eligibility at first base and outfield entering his age-27 season in 2025. In theory, Steer and the entire Reds team should benefit from new manager Terry Francona's experience and expertise.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Starting throwing program Tuesday

Steer (shoulder) will begin a throwing program Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Steer played through a right shoulder strain late last season and the injury has lingered this spring, limiting him to only seven plate appearances at designated hitter. While his readiness for Opening Day seems unlikely, the Reds are not ready to rule him out yet. Wittenmyer notes that a cortisone injection has knocked out the inflammation in Steer's shoulder and the focus lately has been correcting bad habits created by compensating for the injury. The Reds likely would want Steer available to play the field in order to avoid the IL, and it's uncertain when he might be cleared for that.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Takes swings in cage

Steer (shoulder) took swings in a batting cage Wednesday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. This was the first time Steer had a bat in his hand since getting a cortisone shot in his right shoulder March 1. He took flips in the cage before heading to the weight room. The next step is to see how the 27-year-old infielder/outfielder responds to the activity. Steer believes he can still get ready for the regular season, but in the words of manager Terry Francona, "we want his shoulder to tell us that - not Opening Day."

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Undergoes exam

Steer (shoulder) received positive results after being re-examined by the team's medical staff Saturday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. • Reds' Spencer Steer: May open season on IL

Manager Terry Francona said Saturday that Steer (shoulder) could begin the season on the injured list, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Steer was scratched from the lineup ahead of Saturday's game against the Padres due to his injured shoulder, and he elected to receive a cortisone shot after an examination, per Wittenmyer. This will force the 27-year-old to pause all activities for the next few days, and there's no telling at this point how long it will be before he's cleared to play in games.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Throwing program on hold

Steer (shoulder) still feels discomfort and had a scheduled throwing program put on hold this week, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. He had been set to begin throwing Monday. "He's just not quite where we want him to be," manager Terry Francona said Thursday. "We'll get him examined one more time and figure out what path we're going." Steer is still able to DH -- he went 1-for-2 in Thursday's Cactus League game against the Diamondbacks -- because it doesn't hurt him to swing a bat. Multiple MRIs have confirmed no structural damage, but as Steer indicated, "shoulders are tricky." He's scheduled to be examined this weekend by the team's orthopedist before any decisions are made or timelines established.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Will DH initially

Steer (shoulder) will serve as the designated hitter in one of Saturday's split-squad games, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Steer is nursing a shoulder injury but is expected to begin throwing soon, per manager Terry Francona. Steer might also play first base with the caveat that he's not to throw until he's ready. Steer, who made 100 starts in the outfield (98 in left field) last season and is expected to be in the outfield mix in 2025, will need to go through a progression before playing there.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Will begin throwing soon

Reds manager Terry Francona said Thursday that Steer (shoulder) will start throwing "fairly soon," Charlie Goldsmith of Charlie's Chalkboard reports. Steer has been slow-played early on in camp due to right shoulder soreness, which is an issue that dates back to the end of last season. He is expected to be limited to serving at designated hitter at the beginning of the spring training schedule. and it's not clear when he might be ready to play the field. At this point, Steer's Opening Day readiness does not seem to be in doubt.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Heading to bench Wednesday

Steer is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins. • Reds' Spencer Steer: Expected to move to LF

Steer is expected to move to left field once Ty France joins the Reds, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Cincinnati acquired France on Monday, but he's not yet with the club. He is expected to be the team's primary first baseman. Collectively, the Reds' first basemen are batting .216 (24th in MLB) with a .631 OPS (28th), although that isn't the fault of Steer, who has played 53 games there in 2024; underperforming players like Christian Encarnacion-Strand (wrist, 60-day IL) and Jeimer Candelario are the main culprits. Bringing in France allows manager David Bell to deploy Steer in left field, which has been another unproductive spot in the lineup.
