• Reds' TJ Friedl: Penciled into leadoff spot

  Friedl is projected to serve as the Reds' Opening Day center fielder and leadoff hitter Thursday against the Giants, Charlie Goldsmith of Cincinnati Magazine reports. Friedl looks poised to return to the role of primary table-setter in Cincinnati -- a spot he filled regularly under former manager David Bell. Injuries limited Friedl to just 85 games last season and likely sapped his effectiveness at the plate, as his OPS plummeted from .819 in 2023 to just .690 in 2024. The 29-year-old only managed two extra-base hits (both doubles) and didn't steal a base this spring, but he at least got on base at a .352 clip across 54 Cactus League plate appearances.

• Reds' TJ Friedl: Moves to leadoff Wednesday

  Friedl batted leadoff and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Guardians. Friedl broke up a no-hitter with a bunt to lead off the seventh inning and scored Cincinnati's first run. He was moved back to leadoff -- his first time since June 23 -- as Jonathan India was held out after clearing concussion protocol. He's struggled of late, going 4-for-24 (.167) over the last eight games. It's assumed Friedl will drop back to the middle of the order once India's ready to return.

Friedl opened the scoring with a two-run single in the fifth inning, then stole second and scored on a Ty France groundout. Over nine games in September, Friedl has gone 7-for-30 (.233) with eight RBI and two steals. The veteran outfielder is up to nine steals this year while adding 11 home runs, 48 RBI, 30 runs scored and a .215/.299/.378 slash line over 70 contests.

After experiencing shortness of breath and exiting early in Saturday's 4-0 loss to the Mets, Friedl was held out of the lineup for the series finale Sunday. Friedl felt well enough to come off the bench to pinch hit in addition to playing two innings in center field in the Reds' 3-1 win, so it comes as little surprise that he'll be back in the starting nine a day later.

A wild day at the park came to an end when Friedl delivered a two-run, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the second time in the game that the Reds had erased a significant Athletics lead. Friedl has RBI in four of the last five games and has knocked in 18 runs over 26 August contests.

  Friedl went 0-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates. Friedl stole a base in the first inning, snapping a streak of 33 games without a theft. It was just the seventh steal of the season for the outfieler, who swiped 27 in 2023. The reduction in steals is partially due to missing many games to injury, but it mostly is the result of no longer batting leadoff. Since returning from one of his injuries in late July, Friedl has primarily batted fourth and attempted just two steals in the 29 games since.

Manager David Bell said one week ago that Friedl was tracking toward a return from the 10-day injured list around July 26. That timeline still looks to be realistic, as Friedl will likely stick around with Louisville for at least a handful of games during the upcoming week to pick up at-bats and log some innings in the outfield as he makes his way back from a right hamstring strain. Assuming Friedl experiences no setbacks with the hamstring while he's at Louisville, he could be activated ahead of Friday's series opener in Tampa Bay.
