Player Outlook
Rowdy Tellez looked well on his way to a second straight 30-homer season in 2023 after putting eight over the boards in April. Things mostly went downhill after that, though. The 28-year-old missed six weeks of action with forearm and finger injuries and by the time he returned in late August Carlos Santana had taken over at first base for the Brewers, leaving Tellez to fight for starts at designated hitter. He did very little with the at-bats he was given down the stretch and Milwaukee chose to non-tender him this offseason. Tellez's hard-hit rate (40.4 percent) and barrel rate (8.7 percent) both dropped off significantly last season, while his strikeout rate (24.5 percent) went up. His age and track record suggest Tellez will bounce back to some degree in 2024, and he should get regular starts at least versus righties after signing with Pittsburgh over the winter.

Tellez is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. Tellez went 5-for-14 with a double and a homer while starting the previous four games, but he'll sit Friday as lefty Garrett Crochet pitches for Chicago. Connor Joe will start at first base and bat third.

  • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Gets aboard three times

Tellez went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 12-2 win over the Brewers. Tellez is 11-for-29 (.379) with five homers and 10 RBI over his last nine contests. The first baseman has found another level to his game -- he had just three homers over his first 68 contests this year. Overall, he's slashing .249/.304/.394 with eight long balls, 30 RBI, 27 runs scored and one stolen base over 240 plate appearances. Tellez is likely to remain in a strong-side platoon role, but he's got upside with his power when he's seeing the ball as well as he has lately.

Tellez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. With lefty Sean Manaea on the hill for the Mets, the lefty-hitting Tellez will hit the bench for the second day in a row. Connor Joe once again checks in for Tellez at first base.

He's been productive in that span by going 17-for-48 with eight RBI and seven runs scored. • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Checking out of lineup Wednesday

Tellez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Though he'll take a seat against a right-hander (Sonny Gray), the lefty-hitting Tellez seems to have a firmer grasp on a strong-side platoon role these days while he's begun to heat up at the plate. Over his last six games, Tellez has gone 9-for-19 with a home run, three doubles, two walks, seven RBI and three runs.

  • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Finally ends homer drought

Tellez went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 4-0 win over the Twins. The 29-year-old slugger took Simeon Woods Richardson deep in the seventh inning to produce the game's first run, then was at the heart of a three-run rally in the eighth. Tellez hadn't homered since March 31, and Saturday's blast snapped a 48-game power drought in which he slashed just .197/.262/.235 with five doubles. He is showing signs of life at the plate, however, batting .391 (9-for-23) over his last seven games with seven of his 15 RBI on the season.

Tellez still remains in a platoon at first base with Connor Joe, however, and Tellez will take a seat Wednesday while the Dodgers bring southpaw James Paxton to the hill.

  • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Snaps out of slump

Tellez went 3-for-4 with a two-RBI double and two RBI singles during Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays. Tellez hadn't logged an RBI since May 5 and had driven in three batters since April 4. He bested that total just on Sunday, plating all four of the Pirates' runs and reaching safely in four of his five plate appearances. Prior to Sunday's contest, Tellez had generated four hits in 40 at-bats with one walk.

  • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Idle against lefty

Tellez is out of the lineup for Sunday's matchup against Atlanta. With Atlanta bringing southpaw Chris Sale to the mound, the lefty-hitting Tellez will retreat to the bench. Even with the Pirates recently optioning another key left-handed bat in Jack Suwinski to the minors, Tellez doesn't look as though he'll necessarily be locked into a regular role against right-handed pitching, either. He was held out of the starting nine for Saturday's 4-1 win while righty Reynaldo Lopez started for Atlanta.

  • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting Saturday

Tellez isn't in the Pirates' lineup Saturday against Atlanta, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Although the Pirates will be facing a right-hander in Reynaldo Lopez, the left-handed Tellez will step out of the lineup. The 29-year-old is slashing just .175/.242/.225 through 132 plate appearances, so it's possible he's losing his grip on the starting job at first base. Connor Joe will get the nod at first while Edward Olivares starts in right field.
