Eugenio Suarez has been one of the most consistent sources of power over the past five-plus years, but the veteran third baseman was only able to go deep 22 times in 2023 with a .391 slugging mark; his lowest since his rookie year with the Tigers in 2014. He also once again led baseball in strikeouts with 214 while hitting just .232, and only his 96 RBI kept him fantasy-relevant for the majority of the summer. While the numbers were disappointing, the metrics suggest that Suarez deserved better in several categories. His expected slugging percentage of .423 was markedly higher, and his barrel percentage of 13.2 ranked in the 87th percentile of qualified hitters. He also was able to draw 70 walks for a second straight season, and his excellent defense at the hot corner kept him in the lineup for all 162 games even when the hits weren't falling. Suarez is a good bounceback candidate for anyone looking for power from the hot corner, and he receives a modest home-park upgrade after getting dealt from Seattle to Arizona this offseason.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Slugs 10th homer

Suarez went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Saturday's 12-1 win over the Blue Jays. Suarez got Arizona to double digits with his eighth-inning blast. The third baseman's bat has come alive in July with four homers and 12 RBI over his last seven contests. For the season, he's maintained a .211/.298/.363 line with 10 long balls, 46 RBI, 38 runs scored and two stolen bases over 92 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Homers again

Suarez went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's 1-0 win over Atlanta. Suarez provided the game's only offense with a solo shot in the fifth inning. It was the second consecutive game with a home run for Suarez, who's hit three over the last five games and is 15-for-49 (.306) with eight extra-base hits and 13 RBI over the last 15 contests. It might be a good time to buy low on the third baseman; Suarez's first three months (.591 OPS) have been well below his career norm (.756).

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Goes deep in win

Suarez went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 win over Atlanta. Suarez launched a no-doubt, two-run home run to left field in the second inning to tie the game. He later delivered a run with a seventh-inning double. It's a small sample size, but Suarez may be emerging from a season-long slump. He was batting .192 with a .584 OPS as recently as June 23, but the third baseman has posted a .298 average and .942 OPS in the 14 games since, including two home runs and nine RBI over the last four contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Paces offense with five RBI

Suarez went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, a double, five RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 9-1 win over the Padres. Suarez had his most productive day at the plate this season. He broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a two-run blast off Dylan Cease and then later tallied a bases-clearing double in the ninth. He had one more RBI on Sunday than his previous 20 starts combined. It was just his second game of the year with three hits and also his second with at least three runs driven in. Suarez is now slashing just .210/.298/.339 with seven homers, 39 RBI, 32 runs and a 32:99 BB:K in 339 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Makes seventh straight start

Suarez started at third base and went 1-for-3 in Friday's 10-8 loss to the Padres. Suarez, whose job was in jeopardy three weeks ago, has resumed his role as the team's everyday third baseman since the Diamondbacks sent Blaze Alexander back to Triple-A Reno. Suarez has started seven consecutive games and is 7-for-22 (.318) over that time, raising his season average above .200.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Excluded from lineup

Suarez is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest against the Twins. Suarez had started each of the previous eight games but went just 2-for-24 over that stretch to drop his season-long batting line down to .192/.274/.312. The Diamondbacks will give Kevin Newman a start at third base Thursday.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Hitting bench Sunday

Suarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. Though manager Torey Lovullo hinted earlier this week that Blaze Alexander would receive more playing time at third base going forward, Suarez still appears to be the Diamondbacks' preferred option at the hot corner for now. Though Alexander will man third base Sunday, Suarez had started in each of the previous three games and went 3-for-8 with a solo home run and three walks across those contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Swats homer Friday

Suarez went 1-for-2 with two walks and a solo home run in Friday's 7-1 win over the White Sox. Suarez led off the fourth inning with his sixth home run of the season. His struggles at the plate have put his job at the Diamondbacks' primary third baseman in jeopardy, but Suarez has started two of the three games since manager Torey Lovullo indicated Blaze Alexander would see more time at third base.

Suarez started at third base and went 0-for-2 with a walk and a run scored in Thursday's 11-1 win over the Angels. He was also hit by a pitch. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Alexander will be given more opportunities at third with Suarez (.195/.267/.309) mired in a season-long slump.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Playing time to drop

Suarez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Angels, and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Blaze Alexander will receive more playing time at third base moving forward, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Wednesday's absence is just Suarez's fourth from the lineup this season, but it appears he'll sit more often going forward due to his .197/.263/.312 slash line through 66 games. Lovullo didn't specify how the playing time will be split, so it's possible Suarez still sees the majority of the action at the hot corner. Regardless, the 32-year-old should no longer be considered the Diamondbacks' everyday third baseman, at least for the time being.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Lifts fifth homer

Suarez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Padres. The homer was Suarez's second hit over six games in June, though both knocks have gone for extra bases. The third baseman hasn't hit for average well in the last five years, but his .202 mark this season is poor even by his usual standard. He's added a .592 OPS, five homers, 28 RBI, 24 runs scored and two stolen bases through 62 contests.

The third baseman has been grinding with a .182 average and .504 OPS for the month of May. He opened the season as the regular sixth batter in the order but was dropped to seventh against right-handers since the middle of last week.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Receives first day off of season

Suarez is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cardinals. The Diamondbacks haven't indicated that Suarez is nursing any sort of injury in the aftermath of Saturday's 4-2 win, so the veteran third baseman is likely just getting a maintenance day. Jace Peterson will step in at the hot corner while Suarez rests for the first time in 2024 after starting at third base in each of Arizona's first 15 games while hitting .259 with two home runs and 12 RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suarez: Swats homer in loss

Suarez went 2-for-3 with a walk and solo home run in Saturday's 9-4 loss to Colorado. Suarez is off the a nice start for his new team, hitting safely in all three games thus far and going 6-for-11 with four RBI and three runs scored. Third base was an unsettled position for the Diamondbacks in 2023, which is why the organization moved to solidify the hot corner during the offseason when it signed Suarez. The 32-year-old has remained productive and durable into his thirties. Suarez played in all 162 games (22 HR, 96 RBI) in 2023 and in 150 games (31, 87) the previous season.
