Angels' Tyler Anderson: Settles in for quality start

Anderson didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Pittsburgh after allowing three runs on six hits and no walks in six innings. He struck out one.
Anderson struggled to keep the ball in the yard, giving up two home runs over the first two innings, but he was still able to settle in and register a quality start in his second straight outing. Despite tallying a season low in strikeouts, the crafty lefty managed to induce 14 whiffs, so he did keep Pittsburgh off balance Thursday. Anderson will take a strong 2.60 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 22:12 K:BB over 27.2 innings (five starts) into his next projected start, which lines up for next week against Seattle at pitcher-friendly T-Mobile Park.

Logan Webb was the more dominant pitcher on the night, fanning 12 Angels in his six frames, but Anderson kept the opposition off balance over his 96 pitches (64 strikes) and didn't allow a runner to get past second base. Anderson's issued eight walks over his last two starts (10.2 innings), though he's held opponents to just two runs and two hits in that span, including Saturday's scoreless effort. Overall, the 35-year-old southpaw has pitched to a 2.87 ERA with a 1.15 WHIP and 15 strikeouts through his first 15.2 innings this season. Anderson is currently in line for a home matchup with the Giants in his next outing.

Anderson allowed one run through the first three frames before serving up a solo shot off the bat of Kyle Manzardo. Through two starts, Anderson has given up five runs (three homers) across 10 frames. He threw just 49 of 81 pitches for strikes Sunday but forced 10 whiffs, including six with his changeup. Anderson's next outing is lined up to be in Houston next weekend.

Anderson took a no-decision Monday against the Cardinals. He struck out four over five innings while allowing three runs on six hits and two walks.
The Angels southpaw tossed 91 pitches, including 61 strikes, while inducing 10 whiffs during his season debut in St. Louis. However, Anderson struggled to contain the long ball as Lars Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan -- both left-handed batters -- hit solo shots in the first and second innings, respectively. After pitching to a 7.41 ERA and 1.65 WHIP across 17 innings in the spring, Anderson still has some tuning up to do before he makes his next start against the Guardians at home this weekend.

Anderson allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings in a Cactus League game against the Athletics on Friday.
Anderson served up a solo homer to Shane Langeliers in the first inning, then retired only one of the five batters he faced in the second. The lefty was temporarily pulled, but under spring training rules he was allowed to re-enter the contest. Though Anderson was able to get through two more innings without allowing a run, he loaded the bases without retiring a batter in the fifth frame, and all three runners came around to score after his departure. Anderson hasn't been sharp this spring, as he's posted a 10.64 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB over 11 innings. Nonetheless, his veteran status limits the level of concern about his performance in exhibition play, and Anderson is locked into a spot near the top of the Angels' regular-season rotation.

Anderson allowed two doubles through three batters to give up a run, but he settled down after that and retired five of the final six hitters he faced. The veteran lefty is coming off an All-Star campaign during which he posted a 3.81 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 142:73 K:BB over 179.2 innings. Anderson is penciled in for a spot near the top of the Angels' rotation along with new teammate Yusei Kikuchi.

Anderson hasn't lasted more than five innings in any of his last five outings, stumbling to a 5.82 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 21:12 K:BB through 21.2 innings over that stretch. He lines up to make his final start of 2024 on the road next week against the White Sox.
