Player Outlook
Tommy Pham was well traveled again during the 2024 campaign. After playing for two teams in both 2022 and 2023, he one-upped himself last season in suiting up for the White Sox, Cardinals and Royals. The production for the veteran outfielder was fairly lacking, with a .710 OPS in Chicago representing the high-water mark out of the three stops. Pham's quality of contact was also down from where we're used to seeing it, although a 42.7 percent hard-hit rate and 90.4 mph average exit velocity were both still well above average. He had a below average sprint speed for the first time in his career in 2024 and it's difficult to see a rebound in that part of his game heading into his age-37 season. Signing with Pittsburgh provides a path to playing time in right field, but Pham is likely to be a volatile fantasy option at this point in his career.

  • Pirates' Tommy Pham: Back in action Thursday

Pham (hip) will start in left field and bat third in Thursday's Grapefruit League contest versus the Twins. Pham was removed from Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers due to left hip tightness, but he's ready to go following a few days of rest. The veteran outfielder is projected to open the season as the Pirates' left fielder and leadoff hitter against left-handed pitching, at minimum.

  • Pirates' Tommy Pham: Labels early exit as precautionary

Pham (hip) characterized his early exit from Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers as a precautionary move, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. "In the season, I'd play through it," Pham said of his tight left hip. "In the season, I don't miss any time with this. It's just because it's second week of March, spring training. You don't have to push it." While Pham's comments offer hope that his hip injury is only a minor concern, he may be withheld from the lineup for a few days until he returns to full health. Pham went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a strikeout prior to departing Sunday's contest.

  • Pirates' Tommy Pham: Exits early with hip tightness

Pham was removed from Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Tigers due to left hip tightness, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Pham went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a strikeout before checking out of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The severity of Pham's injury isn't yet known, and the veteran outfielder could be put through further tests before the Pirates provide an update on his status.

  • Pirates' Tommy Pham: Inks one-year deal with Pittsburgh

The Pirates signed Pham to a one-year, $4 million contract Thursday, Katie Woo and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report. It's a good landing spot for Pham, who could get regular reps in right field, assuming the plan is for Andrew McCutchen to be a full-time designated hitter. Pham, who turns 37 in March, slashed .248/.305/.368 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases over 116 regular-season contests between the White Sox, Cardinals and Royals last season.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Sitting out ALDS Game 3

Pham is not in the lineup Wednesday for Game 3 of the ALDS versus the Yankees. Pham was in the lineup for the first two games of the series, picking up two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. He will begin Game 3 on the bench as Adam Frazier starts in right field and bats eighth.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Not in lineup for Game 2

Pham is absent from the lineup Wednesday for Game 2 of the American League Wild Card Series against the Orioles. Pham got the call in right field for the Royals in Game 1 but went 0-for-3 with a strikeout. For Game 2, the club will roll with Hunter Renfroe as its right fielder and No. 7 hitter against Zach Eflin.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Resting Saturday

Pham is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants. It'll be Pham's first off day in September, snapping a streak of 17 consecutive starts. During that span, the outfielder has split time between DH (four games), left field (six games) and right field (seven games). MJ Melendez, Kyle Isbel and Adam Frazier fill the outfield from left to right Saturday while Yuli Gurriel slots in at DH.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Gets aboard four times

Pham went 3-for-4 with a walk in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Yankees. Pham's bat has been hot in September -- he's gone 13-for-41 (.317) over 10 contests this month. He has five multi-hit efforts in that span, and his ability to get on base at a high rate has helped him take over as the Royals' leadoff hitter. Between three teams this season, the veteran outfielder has a .261/.325/.392 slash line with nine home runs, seven stolen bases, 36 RBI and 45 runs scored over 418 plate appearances.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Swats ninth homer

Pham went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Yankees. The veteran outfielder gave the Royals an insurance run when he took Mark Leiter deep in the seventh inning. Pham has started nine straight games since joining Kansas City at the beginning of September, batting .270 (10-for-37) over that stretch with two of his nine homers on the year, along with one steal, five runs and five RBI.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Swipes bag in Monday's loss

Pham went 0-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 10-4 loss to the Yankees. Pham has hit .250 (8-for-32) with three extra-base hits and four RBI over eight contests since the Royals claimed him off waivers from the Cardinals. For the season, the outfielder is at a .253/.319/.380 slash line with eight home runs, seven steals, 35 RBI and 44 runs scored across 101 contests. He's had a chance to settle in as the Royals' main leadoff hitter, moving Maikel Garcia and Michael Massey down the lineup when they play.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Powers offense to victory

Pham went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Wednesday's 4-1 win against Cleveland. Pham accounted for the bulk of the scoring in the contest with a 423-foot, three-run blast in the fourth inning. It was his first long ball as a Royal and his first overall homer since he went deep against the Rays as a member of the Cardinals on Aug. 6. Pham has batted out of the leadoff spot in each of his four games with Kansas City and has gone 5-for-17 in that role thus far.

  • Royals' Tommy Pham: Leads off in team debut

Pham started in right field and went 2-for-5 with a pair of base hits Sunday in the Royals' 7-2 loss to the Astros. Fresh off being claimed off waivers from the Cardinals, Pham was put to work right away by the Royals, who deployed him as their leadoff hitter in his team debut. Pham could eventually be a candidate to move down the lineup, but he should have a decent amount of leash in a near-everyday role in the corner outfield while Hunter Renfroe (hamstring) is on the shelf. Before being claimed by the Royals, Pham had turned in a .254./321/.378 slash line with seven home runs and six stolen bases in 374 plate appearances between the White Sox and Cardinals this season.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: DFA'd by St. Louis

The Cardinals designated Pham for assignment Friday. Pham was placed on waivers Thursday, but the Cardinals will now officially move him off the 40-man roster by designating him for assignment. The veteran outfielder had gone just 3-for-39 over his last 15 games with St. Louis, but with his proficiency against left-handed pitching and playoff pedigree, he could draw interest from contenders.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: Placed on waivers

The Cardinals placed Pham on waivers Thursday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. Pham got off to a hot start after being acquired by St. Louis at the trade deadline, but he's just 3-for-39 over his last 15 games and has seen his playing time dwindle. The 36-year-old has a .762 OPS versus left-handed pitching and is a career .313/.333/.513 hitter in 31 postseason games, so there would seem to be a good chance a contender scoops him up on waivers. If Pham clears waivers, he will remain with the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: Sitting again Saturday

Pham is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Twins. Pham will sit Saturday for a second straight game. He's struggled from the plate in August, slashing .176/.283/.314 with four runs scored, one home run and six RBI across 60 plate appearances. Alec Burleson, Victor Scott and Lars Nootbaar will man the outfield for the Cardinals.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: Could see more starts vs. RHPs

Pham will start in left field and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Pham had made three of his last four starts against left-handed starting pitchers, but he'll crack the lineup Wednesday while the Brewers send a righty (Tobias Myers) to the hill. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, Pham could have a pathway to regular playing time moving forward, as the Cardinals optioned struggling infielder Nolan Gorman to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday. With Gorman out of the picture, Brendan Donovan will likely handle a regular role at second base moving forward, which clears room in the corner outfield for both Pham and Lars Nootbaar.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: On bench Tuesday

Pham is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds. Pham has one hit in his last 14 at-bats across the last four games, and he'll get the night off Tuesday to clear his head. Since being acquired by the Cardinals near the trade deadline, Pham is slashing .279/.311/.535 across 45 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: Goes yard in win

Pham went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a double in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Rays. Pham went deep in the second inning, and the Cardinals were able to hold the lead the rest of the way. The outfielder's swinging a hot bat since returning to St. Louis, going 11-for-29 (.379) with six extra-base hits and nine RBI over his last eight games. With Michael Siani (oblique) sidelined, Victor Scott is likely to see most of the time in center field, but Pham should be in the lineup regularly since he can cover all three outfield positions. Pham is slashing .277/.336/.417 with seven homers, 28 RBI, 38 runs scored and six stolen bases over 78 contests this season.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: Collects three hits in victory

Pham went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI in Wednesday's 10-1 rout of the Rangers. Pham returned to St. Louis -- where his professional career began -- in a trade with the White Sox on Monday and swatted a grand slam in his 2024 debut with the club Tuesday. The veteran outfielder continued to produce in his first start since the trade Wednesday, plating a two-run double in the fifth frame as part of a three-hit performance. Pham has hit safely in five straight contests and is batting .474 (9-for-19) with a homer and seven RBI during that span.

  • Cardinals' Tommy Pham: Pinch-hit slam in return to Cards

Pham went 1-for-2 with a grand slam in Tuesday's 8-1 win over the Rangers. Pinch hitting for Matt Carpenter in the fifth inning against southpaw Cody Bradford, Pham made an immediate impact in his first action as a Cardinal since 2018, ripping a changeup up in the zone over the right-center field fence to break open the game. The 36-year-old outfielder made his big-league debut for St. Louis in 2014 and was repatriated at the trade deadline this year from the White Sox, with whom he'd compiled a .266/.330/.380 slash line with five homers and six steals in 70 games. He's expected to handle a short-side platoon role for the Cards, but with Brendan Donovan batting .128 (5-for-39) over his last 10 games, the door could be open for Pham to hit his way into a bigger role in the outfield.
