Mackenzie Hughes has the most points in the FedEx Cup standings for eligible golfers to compete in the 2023 FedEx Cup Fall schedule. He's 51st in the current standings entering the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship, which tees off on Thursday at the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi. It's the second of seven PGA Tour events to allow players to improve their positions in the rankings and earn exemptions to play in more top tournaments during the 2023-24 PGA Tour season.
Hughes is listed as a 45-1 longshot according to the latest 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship odds. Hughes has finished 52nd or worse in his last three starts on the PGA Tour, so can you feel confident in playing him as a longshot in your 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship bets? Ludvig Aberg is the 10-1 favorite after being a part of Team Europe's Ryder Cup victory last weekend. Before locking in your 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.
Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.
McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. And at the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scottie Scheffler winning in 2022.
In addition, the model included Nick Taylor in its best bets to win the 2023 RBC Canadian Open. That bet hit at +7000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,900. McClure's best bets also included Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.
This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.Â
Now that the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship field is set, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.
Top 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship predictionsÂ
One major surprise the model is calling for at the Sanderson Farms Championship 2023: Eric Cole, who is listed second in the odds, stumbles this week and barely cracks the top five. Cole struggled at this event last year, missing the cut at 2-over par. He missed the cut in his first five tournaments of the 2022-23 season, so he is overvalued following a strong performance his last time out.Â
Cole finished fourth at the Fortinet Championship, marking his first top-10 finish since the RBC Canadian Open in June. He ranks outside the top 175 in total driving and is No. 135 in greens in regulation percentage, which will be difficult to overcome this weekend. SportsLine's model has identified several other golfers who are much stronger betting options in the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship field.Â
Another surprise: Adam Svensson, a 40-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. He finished T-15 at the BMW Championship in his last PGA tournament but failed to record enough points to advance in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. It was his second top-15 performance over three tournaments as he played some of his best golf down the stretch.
This will be Svensson's fifth PGA Tour event at the Country Club of Jackson and he's made the cut in two of four previous outings. He should feel comfortable on the course as he looks to win his second PGA Tour event of the season after taking the RSM Classic in November. He ranks 11th in total birdies on the PGA Tour and if he can put himself in advantageous positions this week, Svensson will provide tremendous value at 40-1 odds. See who else to pick here.
