Draft Scouting Report

Rating: 81.00 (Starter)
Pro Comparison: Golden Tate
Summary

Jalen Royals turned an impressive showing at a 2022 Utah State summer football camp into a two-year stint as the Aggies’ No. 1 receiver. Armed with a good physical build complete with a thick upper body, he almost exclusively lined up on the left side of their spread offense formation and worked at all three levels. Not only was Royals used to take the top off defenses, but he was often targeted on short and intermediate routes with the intention of letting him make plays after the catch. Royals is an athletic, crafty receiver with playmaker traits, but he will need extensive coaching to grow into a more complete player.

About
  • Two-time All-Mountain West (first team in 2023 and second team in 2024)
  • 2023: Set program record with 15 receiving touchdowns; led FBS with seven receiving touchdowns of 50-plus yards
Strengths
  • Very good quickness: Quick footwork both off the snap and in his breaks were Royals’ primary means of getting open as well as adding yards after the catch.
  • Very good adjustments: Royals would nab off-target throws routinely and often use ""late hands"" to not tip off defenders.
  • Good balance: Royals would absorb contact and add extra yards after contact.
Weaknesses
  • Inexperience against top competition: Royals played just five games in two seasons against top 25-ranked teams (two touchdowns) and three games in two seasons against Power 4 Conference teams (91 yards, zero touchdowns).
  • Fast but will get caught from behind: Royals is fully expected to run a sub-4.45-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine and proved to be tough to wrangle in space, but it wasn’t the top trait that helped him separate/run away from defenders.
  • Press coverage/physicality: Royals would beat weak tackle attempts but struggled when defenders got handsy or physical. He’ll only see it more in the NFL.
Combine Data
  • 40-yard dash: 4.42 seconds
  • Bench press: 13 reps
